Not very if he's not allowed to spend any of it.

He can spend it all on RL if he wants, just not on player's salaries.

| Koukash can want whatever he likes. The odds of the other SL chairmen allowing the rules to be changed just so he can go out and buy success are close to zero.

| Funnily enough a good example of ownership of a sport could be F1 where Ecclestone is lord and most of the "teams" are constantly treading a financial abyss.
Now where have I heard of that before?

And this is precisely where RL needs to get real. Rich people generally want success for their own club. With the right system (e.g. no cap or much higher cap or marquee exemptions, with very tight squad limits) the rest of the sport can benefit from the personal ambitions of rich people. Or we can continue to shut money out of the game and live in the dreamland where someone is going to just come in and invest in 'the game' rather than through a club. Enjoy the wait.

| What would happen if Koukash, or another chairman, was to sign a squad costing 3x times the annual turnover of his club, then walk away/die/see his business empire go into meltdown?

Why ask such a dumb question? In any business IF such a thing happened the business may well go to the wall.
You could as well ask "What would happen if a club had a business plan that said they'd drop their season ticket prices to such a low level and expect thousands more to be sold, Oh and hold a few concerts in the stadium which will generate fantastic income, then they found later that the numbers didn't work"

You obviously think I'm having a go at Koukash and/or Salford. I'm not. I'm undecided about whether raising the cap would be a good thing or not and I wanted the question I asked answered. Would there be any contingency if he was walk away under the circumstances I outlined? If not, you might well be f0oked - not in the Bradford way - but properly fo0ked, as in having no club.

| Yes, but that's so obvious it's hardly worth asking the question - what would happen in ANY business if the main backer walked?
It's the fundamental issue when clubs/businesses are sustained purely by a sugar daddy.
I don't believe for an instant that Dr K will stay involved for the rest of his life if all he does is pump cash in, he has stated that he sees this as building a viable business with a number of income streams that make the whole enterprise self-sustaining. I'd guess that quite a bit rides on him being able to get control/ownership of the stadium and surrounding land to develop.

| As things stand, if a sugar daddy walked then it'd be possible - not easy but possible - to ensure that the club completed its fixtures in one way or another. We've seen it happen. The consequences for the sport, not just Salford, would be a whole lot more serious were a club to be liquidated mid-season which could happen if its wage bill massively exceeded turnover. One example would be the Sky contract - what would happen there if the RFL wasn't able to fulfill its side of the contract? It's conceivable that one sugar daddy could hold the sport to ransom by threatening to pull out.
That said, I'm definitely not anti-Koukash. I'd love it to work and I'd never begrudge any fans of the more success-starved clubs a crack at the big time. You deserve medals as far as I'm concerned. I just feel that if the cap were to be scrapped there should be some way of securing the club's future, were its major backer to walk.

| But the only way of "of securing the club's future, were its major backer to walk" would be to have some form of guarantee of income following a change of ownership, how could that happen?
It's an interesting question you raise and not just applicable to Salford of course. But then over the years many large businesses have held the government to ransom by threatening to close down or leave the country unless grants/aid/tax concessions are forthcoming - If such a think did happen in SuperLeague and the Sky contract was not able to be fulfilled then I guess the lawyers would have a field day!

| Recently the doc has been holding meetings around the city so fans etc can come and basically have a chat, i have been to one.
He knows what he is doing in the 10 months he has had the club salford may be the most mentioned club in the media due to him keeping salford in the papers.
His plan is to build from the top, get a team that can compete , build a training facility ,youth systems etc
Speaking to brain noble on one of the meetings he said he is still looking at buying part of the stadium and even brain was enthusiastic about the future of salford he was buzzing about the start of the season.
He has brought in a lot of people behind the scenes to improve the club and the general running of the club for the first time in my life salford actually appear to be a professional sports club.Season tickets on sale before the end of the season, having them in your hand by December, shirts on sale way before Christmas the open day shown how good the club is being ran at the moment
When you listen to the doc you can just feel the enthusiasm that in only less than a year he has fell in love with salford and rugby league. His opening line to his meeting was the story of how he got basically conned in to buying salford once he bought the club he found out how badly the state of the club was in he could of walked but he ended up in a local pub in salford to which he got chatting to some salford fans who basically shown there love for the club that they feared was going to vanish for ever, which basically decided the fate of salford to which the doc wanted to take on the challenge.
Maybe he did start his rain by ruffling a few feathers in the rugby league world but he wants the best for salford and the sport.
when you have a new zeland radio sports show ringing him up just to have a chat about what he is doing in salford and that in that part of the world salford is the main rugby league team being mentioned he is doing something right.
