You are correct, however it is a good time for Rugby League to take a long hard look at itself and work out the best way forward for the sport as a whole, not just the few at the "top table"

Bottom line is I'd bet that an independent auditor with experience of looking at the accounts (budgets vs actuals) from sports businesses would be able to tear apart the budgets put together by any SL club.'"
aren't kpmg involved in the franchise process? i thought they were looking at all bids in conjunction with the rfl, from and independant point of view, or have i made that up (or read it on here and thought it must be true!)?

No, you haven't made it up; KPMG and the rather woolly 'experts' from Leeds Met university are involved in scrutinising the books as part of the franchise process.

More interesting than "what did The Grudge" hope to achieve with this latest hissy-fit"?
You must be joking, especially as he is responsible for over 25% of the "£8 million accumulated losses"

You can adopt an osrich mentality, go bust, then merge with another team, pretending nothing happened or address problems before they become insurmountable.

Or not get to these problems in the first place.
I think Messers Pearson, Caddick, McManus, Davy, Lenegan et al will be surprised to hear they are bankrupt.

| Quote: Saddened! "It's time they reduced the salary cap if this is the case. I fully agree with him that 14 clubs is unsustainable. It is, but not only from a financial perspective, the player depth isn't sufficient to produce 14 sides of reasonable quality. 10 would be the optimum number, but at the moment are there even that number of clubs? The likes of Salford, Wakefield, Bradford, Hull KR and Widnes really don't belong in an Elite competition as they are currently.'"
Interesting selection of teams "saddend" you dont quote Cas or London in this group which quite frankly is bewildering

Why is their only a need for one team from Hull. Surely you want the best teams, What's the point in replacing Rovers with a worse team simply for geographical reasons?'"
It was a sarcastic point really, namely that reducing the league to twelve or less might be the last thing he wants. The RFL have been making geographical decisions for years. How else can you explain the Quins and Crusaders? Salford gets in because they are from the Manchester area, and everyone around Wakefield presumes that the RFL want just one club from the Wakefield area.
Geography is part of the consideration in franchising. The point is, for Mr Hudgell, be careful what you wish for.

You only have to go back five years or so, and Warrington were struggling along and Bradford were top of the pile. Things turn around in sport, and you can't take a snapshot in time. When we get the new ground approved, we will be the next on the up.

He'd also be away with the fairies if he thought that Sky would pump the same amount of money into a reduced-team competition

Excellent point - if we lost two clubs during the current Sky contract, you just watch them insist on re-negociation!

I'm sorry but when a club like Sheffield who don't own their own stadium and don't get any Sky money can run a club and make nearly £10,000 profit it shows how it can be done..
It's about staying within your means, something which a lot of super league clubs aren't doing.
