ill trust david gallop over you.
sorry'"
Would that be the same David Gallop that said this?
"There was unanimous support that the game needs to be able to grow the existing pie so that we can increase revenue for the existing clubs, increase payments for players and increase the amount we can invest in junior development," Mr Gallop said afterwards.
And this?
"You can't do those things and invest in expansion ... and until there is a strong business case for any expansion contributing to the growth of the competition, then it will not be part of [the NRL's] immediate plans."
I think we should be told.

despite all their advantages after 100 years most NRL clubs still aren't financially sustainable and yet Dally has the cheek to have a go about Widnes!
Dally is in the 1% of Australins that think Gallop is doing a good job! (for RL not News Ltd that is!)
PNG is a pipe dream sadly.

Brisbane 2 - will happen but not for a few years and will be fought tooth and nail by the most pwerful club in the NRL
Rockhampton (pop 75,000) - small town mentality at its best, like admitting Barrow to SL
CC - will happen when a Sydney team goes bust and has to relocate. Like Leigh the suburban Bears have found their natural level.
PNG - la la land
Wellington - no bid, no interest expressed
oh yes then there is the 4th biggest and richest city in the country with its hand up!

| Quote: Beverley red "I have lived away from the league areas for a big part of my life & played Union a lot more than league, so points to note just because the games started out from the same roots & some aspects of our games are similar to think that they will turn up on mass & be converted is not true. A lot will attend a few games each year but most dont like League for the same way we dont like Union.
I have just watched the Barbarians NZ union game with some work mates. I get bored waiting for a scrum to take place they want more & they like the contest there. I think the number of penalties is a pain they think it is an art to get your oponents to commit an offence & win a penalty. From thier point our scrums are rubbish & the play the ball is a joke! where is the contest for the ball ? they say. I say when is someone going to make a tackle or score a try?. You have to treat the games as two totaly diferent entities. The way to expand is get kids playing & parents watching geting the game into schools & the minds of people in the chosen area. It is a long slow prosses & needs the whole of the game to buy into the idea.'"
I wasnt suggesting that union fans would en masse go over to league but if one in 10 union fans in wales could be converted we would have a significant fan base there. I agree with you about the schools being so important, i think theres something like 100 schools in wales playing rl now, if just 2 kids from every school become rl fans then we have 200 extra fans a year each one spreading the word of the game around wales and beyond, perhaps playing at some level and one day raising there own children to be rl fans. Doing things like this might take 20-30 years tp reap the full benefits buts those benefits will be massive.

| Quote: Ken Acker "Well some of us have spent a lot of time "over there". We have regularly been to games and shockingly are still alive and uninjured. You are talking out of your rear end. Are you one of those cowards that hide behind the Australian High Commission walls trying to make the place sound more dangerous than it is so that you get paid more?'"
I am not hiding behind anyone Mate.
I work for a company that has PNG as part of its territory and chooses not to send its staff there like many other big companies.
My old MD spent 20 years there and he had almost become like a native only with big racist attitudes.
If you live and like it there good on you but it is lower third world with hardly any law enforcement that would be considered the minimum in a first world country.
With no economy or cashed up residents how will it support a team?
As others have said no pay TV, Sponsorship or fan support other than expats in Oz?
Government money passed on from Oz aid?
Aid should be just that, if its redirected it will be cut off.
Thats a solid business plan.

| If you were an official at one of the other NRL clubs, would you be happy sending your players over there?
Looking past the alleged security issues, what happens if one of your lads gets a badly broken leg a la Chev Walker? Do they have the facilities to treat stuff like that in the manner we expect?

| Reasons why it will never happen:
1) They don't have the standard of players and will not be able to attract any overseas players to filll the shortfall for the first decade+
2) They don't have the stadium and would need a lot more than the PNG Govt can offer to build one
3) The security. The wimpy Kangaroos wouldn't tour Europe after 911, you think they will go to Port Moresby every other week?
4) It is 3rd world country and the locals could not afford to pay what would be needed to sustain a team
5) They are worth NOTHING to the TV deal or to clubs sponsorships
6) There is no way they will be able to get enough corproate sponsorship to have a revenue of around $15-20mill a year
In short it ain't going to happen! There are alot better and more sustainable things we could be doing to support the game in PNG but pinning some dream on an NRL place is stopping realistic developments happening imo.

| Quote: Jonesy "Odem, I guess what Australia did for the Kiwis doesn't count?
Maybe if you consider a few points first.
PNG is third world
It survives on some Mining royalties and overseas aid mainly from Australia.
The Hotels in PNG are like military compounds.
Many of the Anglo locals carry guns for self defence.
If you should run over a local you are advised to keep driving and report it to the nearest police station, why? because you will be killed if you get out of your Car.
There is no money to support a team and Moresby to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne is not like Wigan to Leeds or Hull to London.
Last but not least there is no commercial viability to sell foxsports to the locals as they are poor and don't have a TV.
Absolutely spot on

Maybe they just didn't want to go?
Its a nothing tour that achieves nothing other than two halves of football against England where Oz shows what they can do.
How much pressure are the Australian team under to keep a game competitive "for the games sake"
Shred England for a Half and turn off
Arm wrestle for a half and play tit for tat in tries then shred them again.
Its like a B grade movie script.
Hang on....
Rocky.............
He is getting killed....
No he is getting MAD.......................
Adrian..................

Even then it doesnt always work though.
