| Quote: Hopie "The players are not good enough, and there is nobody who isn't playing who can quickly turn this around.
There aren't enough people playing the game in this country, and those that are don't have the skills or the coaching to improve those skills.
The game needs to be restructured from top to bottom or this constant decline will continue, the standard of play on this tour is the result of years of mismanagement.'"
Spot on.

Austin is not a winger and it's a disservice to all those who do play in that position week in week out for their clubs that he was picked (twice) in that position.
There is no issue if injuries happen during a game but, as good as he is and Austin is a decent player, he is not a winger and has been exposed (twice) and why on earth did we fly a reasonable second rower (Hughes) halfway across the planet to play centre ?
Our three quarters just looked all at sea defensively but, credit to PNG for taking full advantage.

Why pick them ? We are rubbish with them , we might as well pick British lads and lose

| How many tickets does the RFL expect to shift if Bennett is still in charge next year?

Flying a second rower over to play centre was a poor call but, Austin on the wing, especially having flown a replacement accross, is one of the worst selections in the last 20-30 years.
Half of that side didn't look interested or enthusiastic last week and even fewer were bothered this morning.
We have no pace, no guile and no fecking guts.
"Great" Britain, no way, why on earth didn't they leave this antiquated brand in the cupboard.
Even our "much feared" pack looked slow and ordinary
That pack has been outplayed in all four games, it's vastly overrated and too old. We should have been trying two or three younger forwards out in readiness for next year's ashes and the 2021 World Cup.

That it my point they took the place of actual Britons and made no difference.

| We need a coach that will put pride back in the shirt and fire in the bellies of the players.
For me Bennett wanted them to play his structured brand of rugby league which quite frankly was soulless.
Wane would be my choice. Not the most attractive rugby but lets have a bit of pride in how we play.
Did this team ever get out of 2nd gear?

I am among the many who have posted that that entire squad made no sense:
Wingers - Surely we have better
Centre - Just one in the squad
Half backs - Why take so many to have some sat in the stands, or in the outside backs
Props - Needed to look to the future, Hill and Jammer shouldn't have been in the squad
Hooker - Clark either sat on the bench, or in the stand
Second Row - Selection of Bateman and Whitehead, probably about right, but why take Hughes to play at centre
Loose Forward - We need one with some handling ability
Missed opportunities to build for the 2021 World Cup. Even losing all four games, it may have been slightly more palatable if we'd have at least done so by planning for the future.

| Totally disagree about building for the future. It’s the old trap British sport falls into. You should always play your strongest team but my all means bring hopefuls into the squad to permit smooth succession.

| Great Britain and England will never improve unless there is money put into the non-heartland areas. I have posted about this in another thread.
However it is silly to dismiss the whole squad. The demise of both Samuel Burgess and Sean O'Loughlin in the same year has been a huge blow to the team's morale. Also the presence of Thomas Makinson, Mark Percival in the outside backs, and Samuel Tomkins (who was a star of the Downer Nines) in the halves, would have given the team a much better capability in attack.
It would be silly to dismiss John Bateman and Elliot Whitehead, who are both quality players. James Graham is getting on in years, but still deserves his place and the captaincy. Thomas Burgess is also okay, even if not great. We can hope that Luke Gale will be uninjured and recover his form of 2017 when he plays at Leeds next year. Those players could provide the core of the senior players in 2020.
It is worth contemplating that if France was given the chance to strengthen its roster, by having Toulouse in Super League, and Avignon at least in the Championship before getting promoted to Super League, and if England played at least two games a year against France (one in England, one in France), then the quality of the England team would also likely improve. The astute Ian Lenagan has suggested as much. But this aspect of development is going to take a few years, even if Toulouse joins Super League in 2021, which is not guaranteed.
A stronger England and France, with the possibility of a strong Canada and USA in ten years from now, would rejuvenate the international game. We cannot rely on the South Pacific as the only place for developing the game, because the Pacific islands, including PNG, don't have the financial resources, population, or sponsorship money to make the international game more profitable. The northern hemisphere is the region where the money and people are.

We didn't pick the strongest squad to start with, and had either players who were out of form or out of position (sometimes both).
So much for smooth succession when you lose all four games. Bennett neither bothered with taking our strongest squad to the airport, nor bothered giving everyone in the squad game time. We got zip out of this tour, and the biggest lesson everyone's learned from it is that Bennett should be fired.

We need to get shut now.
