Quote: Hangerman2 "Why am I not surprised you’re not backing him. It not that you don’t show a Trinity bias that’s your choice - me I’m totally biased. It’s that you show an I incredible anti your own team bias.

If having watched Tom over the last ten weeks scoring incredible try after try and youre not convinced he isn’t the best winger in SL both on form and ability then I can only assume it’s because you don’t want to be convinced.

I get why others may have doubts but how a so called fan who’s allegedly watched him in every game staggers me.'"

If ability is scoring tries in meaningless games, then maybe. However, what really counts is how you play at the highest level. Would Johnstone add as much to an England team v the Aussies as McGillvary? No, not like i have to prove this, McGillvary's record speaks for itself. One of the top 3 players in the last world cup as chosen by a panel of far greater esteem than you Vastman old lad. In the top games how you carry out of defence and finish chances is far more important than midfield agility and speed. Rankles when people try to put forward players untried as the BEST, good, yes, the BEST, definitely not, until proven.'"

You may want to look at Johnstones stats. If your using Macgillivray as an example of carrying out of def then you may be interested to know Tom is strong in that department. His avg gain and metres far more than macgillivray for example. If you say that it’s more important in how you carry in def then that’s one thing atoms great at and if it’s finishing chances from midfield then you can look at other stats which Tom also tops to know he can finish any half chance from anywhere on the field. Long, mid or short. If anything your strengthening toms inclusion there.

Tom has been in excellent form. And is on form the best winger in the comp. it’s ultimately Bennett’s choice as it should be but if players are picked on form this year Tom has a very good chance even over Macgillivray. But, with Macgillivray performance last internationals you can understand why he’d be given the shirt again. Besides, Tom plays on the left and macgillivray right I believe. I know this because Tom enjoyed running past Macgillivray a few times a month ago icon_biggrin.gif

My biggest concern about Johnstone is that he seems to lack any ambition and is happy to stay at a club like Wakefield

Well it wouldn’t be Leeds as think the next 5 or 10 years will just be consolidation for Rhinos. GH knows this as that’s why he opposed the automatic relegation as he’s bricking it as they won’t fork out on any players at the moment.

You can’t compare stats for McGillvary and Johnstone in terms of average gain and metres when one hasn’t played half a season, and the other scores lots of long range tries such as interceptions.

Johnstone is a good winger but totally unproven and I still don’t believe has done it consistently at the highest level. I also think his defence can be a bit suspect too.

And if he’s got to be in on one season then Eden deserves to be in too. Like Eden, Johnstone has got a good centre on his inside and that always helps.

Should be in the Knights squad for the Tour of PNG to see how he gets on there.

Tupou rarely gives him the ball, he scores in spite of his centre, and he's had two and a half good seasons thus far. Still if he plays for England, great, if he doesn't, great.

Im being selfish here, but having a member of your team selected for a representative side does little for the teams supporters. Instead it brings the risks of injury or being poached by a wealthier club.

Tupou has 7 try assists so he must give the ball at some point and one would imagine, most of them are to Johnstone.

Anyway, he's got pace and that's his main asset and he's done well so far in his career. Next step is for Wakey to make a semi/final/the top 4 and from him to play for England Knights to truly see how far he can go.

8 of his tries have come against bottom 4 sides this season, with only 6 against top 4 sides so it suggests he's played better and had more opportunities unsurprisingly against average or below teams. I know that will probably the case for most wingers but we need a winger who can score at the top level if we're looking at replacements for Hall.

I presume you mean the super 8's match in which McGillvary scored once and went off injured, in which Johnstone scored 2, 1 was a walk in after an overlap the other a long distance interception which saw him start in front of McG who wasn't involved in the chase, and not the other 3 meetings in which he didn't play in 2 of them and the one he did Jerry scored 3 tries down Johnstone's side !!

He's a good player and one for the future no doubt but he's not anywhere near the class of McGillvary, Hall or even Manfredi or Davies.
just because Wakefield fans think he's the best there is doesn't make it so.

Quote: Clearwing "

Huddersfield fans aren't too well known for facts.
If you listen to them, especially on the Kilner Bank, every pass from the opposition is forward, every tackle is foul play and their players never do anything wrong.
The most telling comment was "McGilvery not being involved in the chase" as he would have got nowhere near him and that no other player got near Johnstone.

He is not the same type of winger as Hall or McGilvery, who base a lot of their game on power but, Johnstone has pace and footwork that very few others possess. Yes, he is still learning his trade but, given that he's still 23, if he can remain fit, he should be in contention for Hall's left wing berth for England.
The guy is box office and there appears to be a fair amount of envy from the supporters of other clubs, which is great icon_biggrin.gif

Fair enough, my jibe was a bit tongue in cheek icon_smile.gif

And it's deffo the case that Hall should be replaced sooner rather than later whether by Johnstone or someone else.
