That and the recent England/GB Test record over a couple of years Rooster.
You would think complacency and smugness would creep in and a series would be jagged once in a while, ask the Kiwis.
A life time in many cases is a long time to wait for Australia to blink.

Indeed. Your best 17 players have been better than our 17 over a series for many years now.
All of the GB 17 can take a spot in the 400 first grade contract spots in the hyped up comp that is the NRL.
If I could get all those brits who cream over the NRL to come over and spend time at an NRL club to see how this perceived huge gap in training, skills and coaching really is actually nonexistent. Who is this pommie fella Wayne Bennett has got in his first grade coaching set up? Who'd have thunk it? We are shıt at everything afterall.

| Quote: Paul Thexton "Total balls. A man widely regarded as the best prop forward eligible to play for England right now, who [ihas[/i played for England against Aus and more than held his own'"
He may well have held his own against Australia but his performances against them will be overshadowed by the hammerings meted out to the England team on each and every occasion he's played against them.
Quote: Paul Thexton "and has won our domestic equivalent of the Dally M award'"
No offence but Brett Hodgson, Pat Richards and Rangi Chase were the last three winners of our domestic equivalent of the Dally M award, therefore I think it's safe to assume that Aussies would be questioning any degree of equivalence right there.
Quote: Paul Thexton "should in no way have to [iprove[/i that he's above reserve grade quality.'"
I disagree. He does need to prove he's up to playing and competing at NRL level week in, week out and I'm confident that he will succeed in doing exactly that.
Quote: Paul Thexton "It's patronising beyond belief.'"
It is patronising but it's hardly patronising beyond belief. It's an understandable attitude based upon four decades of dominance.

There's nothing mythical about the superiority which exists between Australia over England in RL. Results and performances over the past four decades provide ample enough evidence of the reality of the situation.

But Keith. You watch the NRL with a box of Kleenex next to you.

Can I ask why you bother watching English Rugby League?

I don't understand where this "Australians can't accept English players are good" line of thinking comes from, if anything it's the exact opposite. English players in Australia are given added spotlight and championed, because the NRL sees having a competition of multi-ethnic, multi-nationality players as a great thing.
wwos.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8432400
www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/leag ... 1unbi.html
That's 2 articles written today. And everything that's been said about English players by pundits and fans alike has been positive. If anything some players are getting a free ride because they're English(Burgess, who has been disappointing so far).
There's a big difference between Australians thinking SL is of quality-which it is-and Australians being so arrogant they can't accept we have good players, which is a whole other topic.
If anything the chips on shoulders seem to be more from SL fans who are salty that Australians view the comp as sub-standard - because it is.

Good post - nail on the head.
The levels of insecurity displayed by devoted fans of Super League results in desperate overreactions and ludicrously overblown chip-on-shoulder statements like "Ellis/Burgess/Graham ripping it up in the NRL"... "WCC results prove SL is as good if not better than the NRL"... "Top 5 or 6 SL clubs would easily compete among top NRL teams"... etc. This level of insecurity is also displayed over other issues like the amount of national press coverage demanded as if it ought to be a right, despite the professional game here being played almost exclusively within a small area of northern England closely situated to the M62.
Of course we have some players (not all) who are capable of cutting it in the NRL given time to adapt. Ellis is a solid player in the NRL doing a solid job. He is not ripping it up by any stretch of anyone's imagination. Burgess is a quality player in the NRL when he's not sidelined with injury and actually playing. Graham will be solid, work his guts off and do a fine job.
Our problem is that Super League isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's uncompetitive, lacks intensity and skill levels for the most part and we already know for definite which teams will finish in the Top 5 or 6. Warrington, Saints, Leeds, Wigan for definite - Catalan and Huddersfield highly likely too. The rest of the clubs are a waste of space just making up the numbers. If Super League was that great it wouldn't be propped up with 100 overseas players - most of whom failed to cut it in the NRL to any significant degree - nor would it be handing out Man of Steel awards to the likes of Brett Hodgson, Pat Richards and Rangi Chase.

When you play in the same team as Benji Marshall and win the club’s player of the year award 3 years straight, I would suggest that you are more than merely solid

Exactly. And if you watch the Channel Nein commentary in particular they fawn all over the poms - especially Burgess. But they tend to do that with all the players that they have on the Footy Show etc. But what you have to remember is that poms have the world's biggest chip on their shoulder and it is actually they who can't admit that Australians aren't as obsessed about whether poms are good or not as poms are about it. The NRL is a meritocracy and it doesn't matter where you come from, which club you play for etc. But it suits the chip mentality to think that Aussies go out of their way to run down pommy players here, which is complete nonsense. If anything the opposite is true.

| On the contrary, I think the fawning is a direct result of having your prejudices smashed to smithereens, pleasant surprises always have a greater impact than confirmation of hope.
It's a bit like going to your local chippy that looks like it's not been cleaned for a few years and routinely leave the fat in the fryer for too long before changing it making the chips a bit rubbery sometimes... only to find out that they serve excellent Gravy ... "OMG this is the most amazing Gravy I've ever had in my life! Taste this, grab a fork and taste it, seriously! it's wonderful!"

| One paper I read from over there was saying that the top 6 or so clubs from SL would compete in the NRL no probs and that Graham had nothing to prove in any case.
