| Quote vikingsmurf="vikingsmurf"snip'" WHilst your argument about 1st worlders not wanting to go there seem valid, I've heard of people going there to work (an architecht, in my case). The PNG would have to look after the players, possibley with a secure living zone, which doesn't sound too appealing.. .. ..
But,
People want to play in the NRL - Maybe they would be able to atract some decent british talent who may struggle for a chance at one of the other australian clubs? There must be guys at NRL clubs that find themselves disgarded at 20 who want a second chance?
It may not be a recepie for a premiership winning team, but certainly they could get a side that could play [ia bit[/i, whilst the local talent is groomed.

(ok I admit, I've never been, but) I don't think it should be THAT tough of a sell. Put it this way, players who do move there are earning the same money but cost of living is only a fraction of what it is in Aus. To me it's not that different to guys in there 20's who go out in the middle of nowhere in WA to work in the mines for a few years, make big money and barely spend any. And there must be a little expat bubble there in port moresby too.
AND, they're back in Aus minimum every second weekend.
^ offside monkey makes a good point too, fringe first grade players would make much bigger sacrifices to play NRL than move to PNG.
PS, one last reminder, they almost have 1000 fans, those in favour join so we can boost them up a bit!....

| US$850 a year is the average national wage.
Over 2,000,000 of the population live on less than $450 a year.
3% (195,000) of the Adult population carry the HIV/Aids virus.
975,000 of the 6,500,000 population live in urban areas.
50% is the unemployment rate accepted for port Moresby
85% of the population rely on subsistance economies.
Poverty indicators such as disease and ill health are higher in PNG than most other developing nations.
Education is at a standard lower than most other Pacific island countries.
40% of the country has no literacy
The minerals, timber, and fish sectors are dominated by foreign investors and Exxon/Mobil own the gas. (go figure)
Crime: Has already been said, but a simple google of travel advisory statements from various governments show what problems may arise. Rioting at sporting events is common.......that'll go down well with the viewers back home.
Headlines like this should put off any away fans..........

The list goes on, but basically, before anyone considers putting an NRL team in PNG, which would generate little income for the country as a whole, there are many other important issues that need dealing with.
BTW, who would have to pay for the security and insurance premiums for visiting players......Kidnapping is very popular in PNG.

Im sure we can leave the spending priorities of the Papuans to the PNG government. Im not sure they need advice from a group of RL fans.

| That's right.
And their priority is to use the NRL side to improve a lot of things.
It is going to be used to help encourage kids to go to school, it will spread the message about AIDS and HIV and it will bring money and jobs into the country which will beneift a lot of people.

And I think it might work, too.
By all accounts, many people in PNG idolise pro RL players; there certainly seems to be significant potential for an NRL presence to help influence things for the better by pushing positive messages.

OK.....I accept that sports teams can be used to generate good in a number of ways, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Jobs? Where? Seriously...where?
Encourage Kids to go to school? Yeah, OK......that'll work.
The message about Aids is out there already....it's being ignored.
Benefit a lot of people? B0ll0x......same way the oil, gas, nickle and everything else that isn't nailed down has been raped, this would too.
But let's say you're right......what will they be called? The Raskols?
Where will they play? Port Moresby has 50%+ unemployment...."pound for pound" they might be able to get away with AU$1 a ticket. The Hubert Murray holds 15,000...the Lloyd Robson 10,000...so there's not a lot of ticket revenue available.
What happens when the best players are picked up by the wealthier NRL teams? What happenss to the NRL if these 300,000+ players turn out to be good? Are the days of megawages over....I mean why pay a Billy Slater if you can get a decent player for $25,000 a year?
How will the NRL players feel about visiting one of the worst places to live, with a murder rate 27 times that of Sydney, where kidnapping is fast becoming a national sport, where violent crime is rife? Who picks up the tab for the security/insurance that will be required?
Pipe dream........makes no sense financially to anyone except the teams owners, who will pocket millions in TV money and be able to run a team on about $300,000 a year.

You clearly haven't read what I posted earlier in the thread because it clearly answers most of these questions.
And you clearly don't know anything about how an NRL club operates.
But here goes anyway...
[iWhat will they be called?[/i Who cares.
[iWhere will they play?[/i At a new modern stadium to be built in Port Moresby loosely based on Skilled Park and to be built by the government.[i
What happens when the best players are signed to NRL teams?[/i Good, hope they do. Just like NZ players the more players playing NRL for any number of clubs the better. But this club will be able to pay high wages if it wants to and that money will go a LOT further in PNG than in Australia so in real terms they will be able to compete with Australian clubs for their home grown players very adequately.[i
What happenss to the NRL if these 300,000+ players turn out to be good? Are the days of megawages over....I mean why pay a Billy Slater if you can get a decent player for $25,000 a year?[/i Firstly, the NRL minimum wage is $55,000 at present so that's not going to happen. Secondly, you answered your own question previously. If clubs are fighting for these players their price will go up. Just as it does for all other players, like Billy Slater.
[iHow will the NRL players feel about visiting one of the worst places to live, with a murder rate 27 times that of Sydney, where kidnapping is fast becoming a national sport, where violent crime is rife? Who picks up the tab for the security/insurance that will be required?[/i I don't know how every single player will "feel" about it, probably the same as they do when the Test team or PM's XIII go there every year, but the stadium will have secure accommodation and training facilities where the visiting teams will stay so it's not an issue. Other security costs etc would be minimal. But if it does require extra security I guess this is where some of those jobs will be created that you deny will be created.
Additionally...
The bid team's development work has already seem a 50% increase in student attendance in boys at schools where they have re-introduced RL to school sport.
This will be the most high profile entity in the country and when dealing with an issue like HIV, which is essentially all about raising awareness about the problem and how to mitigate it, a club with that kind of profile is about the best tool they could have.
And the club itself will employ any number of people. And that's just direct employees of the club. On top of that you have the stadium construction and other associated infrastructure development, staff to work in the stadoum and village, as well as on-going services like catering etc for when games are played. Plus the money flowing to players and other local staff will be spent locally and, as we know from professional PNG players from the past, they put a lot of their money back into their local communities. The financial benefits are significant.
And the "owners" won't be pocketing millions. The bid will actually provide more money TO the NRL than it will recieve via the PNG TV rights which will be more than the NRL's annual club grant.

I have...I just can't believe you believe it will happen in the next few years. It won't.
Perth first, Q'land next, Adelaide 3rd (if you want the real TV deal) maybe NZ 4th.....by then you are looking at 2022 at the earliest.
Will the "Raskols" bid team still be as keen in 11 years time?
As for security costs being minimal
People Traffiking, Drugs, prostitution, slavery, kidnapping, extortion, rape, theft, bank robberies.....all regular events in Port Moresby that I repeat, has a 50% rate of unemployment........$1 a ticket tops and TV rights? 85% of the country is involved in subsistance farming
...anyway, you are obviously better placed to comment on this than anyone else whern discussing what is needed in PNG....like for example:
unicef [urlhttp://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/papuang_25037.html[/url
red cross [urlhttp://www.redcross.org.au/howyoucanhelp_campaigns_HIVAIDS_PNGAppeal2006.htm[/url
we care [urlhttp://www.rnzi.com/pages/news.php?op=read&id=49691[/url
.................to name but 3
JESUS WEPT.........even Quinsrl are helping out and you reckon they are ready for an NRL team

| If you read what I wrote why ask stupid questions like "where will the play" when it was clearly answered previously? Or stating they will "pocket millions" whenthey will actually provide millions to the NRL.
So you are either full of and you haven't read anything or you're just ignoraing the answers because they don't suit your simplistic "they are all poor" argument.
Adelaide and New Zealand don't even have a bid and you think they're going to get a team in the next decade? And you dare laugh at someone else? The PNG bid is not even for the next round of expansion, which if you knew anything about the bid you would realise. If the NRL allowed them in in 2022 they'd be more than willing and able.
And you are quick to point out the problems in PNG, but when the government there says an NRL team will help deal with some of these problems you say no, they can't have one. Genius.

...so they won't receive money from the TV kitty.......they will pay the NRL to take part? Yep, that's a sustainable business model I can see lasting
Quote ECT="ECT"IfSo you are either full of poop and you haven't read anything or you're just ignoraing the answers because they don't suit your simplistic "they are all poor" argument. '"
You're mistaking an argument for stating FACTS. PNG is a third world country........it is not able to and should not be considering a bid for any professional sports team BEFORE it sorts its problems out.
Quote ECT="ECT"Adelaide and New Zealand don't even have a bid and you think they're going to get a team in the next decade? '"
Both would bring more to the NRL than the embarrasment that would be a PNG team...seriously, you can't believe that an NRL team would be like mother theresa waiving her healing hand
Quote ECT="ECT"And you dare laugh at someone else? '"
Tell you what......let's laugh together shall we?
Port Moresby: Population 225,000 (at a stab...NO PUN INTENDED ), national average wage $850 a year = $191,250,000 total income for residents of the city.
Wellington (metro) Pop 180,000 national (median*) income $30,000 per year...5,400,000,000 (Billion) income for EVERY* resident in the city regardless of age.
So, just shy of 200 million or 5.5 billion...which one interestes advertisers (that's where your TV money comes from BTW)
NB: PNG pop 6,500,000 x $850 a year = 5.5 billion.....shame there's roads into Wellington and not Port Moresby eh...Quote ECT="ECT"The PNG bid is not even for the next round of expansion, which if you knew anything about the bid you would realise. If the NRL allowed them in in 2022 they'd be more than willing and able. '"
Hmmm.....if I knew anything about the Bid? I take it the article below is incorrect then.
[urlhttp://www.couriermail.com.au/ipad/heat-on-nrl-as-bid-war-mounts/story-fn6ck6f9-1226081903917[/url
Quote ECT="ECT"And you are quick to point out the problems in PNG, but when the government there says an NRL team will help deal with some of these problems you say no, they can't have one.'"
Yeah.....this is the same PNG government that will miss EVERY TARGET set it by the international aid bodies that give it cash yearly......I trust them already
Quote ECT="ECT"Genius.'"
Nope...realist.
The residents of soweto LOVE SOCCER.....funnily, I haven't seen the Premier League, La Liga, Bundersleage or anyone else falling over themselves to tap into the huge potential advertising revenue by getting a team in there. ....that's because they aren't the demographic the TV Advertisers want. I have seen pre-season tours though.......do many NRL teams do pre-season on PNG
Put simply, an NRL Bid document can cost upwards of $100,000 to produce......that money would be better spent by being given to unicef. I repeat...$850 a year is the average income of a PNGian.........
Look...you are so obviously passionate about this subject, but rather than saying "I Know nothing about it" or that "I am full of shi7", why not accept that the PNG bid, now or in 10 or even 25 years years time, is fraught with danger and potential for complete failure. Get them to sort out all the problems first............an NRL team is not the answer.
