39110_1363272058.jpg Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go
-
Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know

| What a silly thread, there are so many things that have an impact on crowds it's impossible to say who gets the best ones.
I could argue that Wigan get the best crowds because we have no success anymmore yet still get high averages. Saints get the worst ones because they are the best team and get lower crowds than a few teams.
Some teams get more away support because they are close to other clubs. Yorkshire clubs get more away support than Wire, saints and Wigan.
Celtic are a new team and get less away support than many teams so they get the best crowds.
Seriously who cares? Crowds should not be a reason to argue but all teams should come together to try and get better crowds for the game. Rl would be unstopable in European sport if we could fill our stadiums every week.

It may not be in Wakefield itself, but it is in the district (which has city status). Why does it matter if it is a town or not?
Where does Harlequins represent, since they have no place name? Your friend that you have bet with could use this against you.
I think the terms in your bet are too vague to actually determine a fair winner, and therefore you will never find one. So your bet is not actually looking too good.

| Cas win. Hands down. Deal with it. Their crowds are awesome for such a small town. Widnes not far off if they were in SL.
Saints are the most pap for a biggish town and loads of success.

But how many of their fans are actually from Castleford? How many are from outside? I would hazard a guess at a lot more are from outside in comparison to clubs in bigger places.
It can all be explained by adapting the Central Placement Theory"Central Place Theory is a geographical theory that seeks to explain the size and spacing of human settlements. It rests on the notion that centralization is a natural principle of order and that human settlements follow it. Created by the German geographer Walter Christaller, the theory suggests that there are laws determining the number, size and distribution of towns. He was interested only in their functions as markets, thus excluding specialist towns such as mining settlements. He argued that population alone couldn t measure the significance of a town." [/i
It was adapted for sports markets (which I can't find at the moment, but used it during my dissertation 3 months ago). Basically population of an actual town means very little. Other factors that I remember seeing from the sports adaptation was access (how easy it is to get to the ground for the majority of the target market) and number of facilities in that given area (i.e. other teams). It also mentioned population within a given radius as opposed to the population of individual settlements being much more significant.
To emphasise the lack of importance, if they changed their name to "West Yorkshire Tigers", then despite still being the same club in the same town, their attendances wouldn't seem as "awesome" due to their new perception as being a county team and not a small town team, despite being the exact same club probably pulling in fans from the same catchment area.

Think your missing the point wellsy
I was just a bet on Average attendance v's population of a town or city or whatever. not where the fans come from..lol

Best get my friend onto his solicitor about this anyway which ever town or city they play in, ill have to take that population.
This wasnt a thread where how far fans travell to watch their game, every team as fans from outskirts and long distances.
It was just a fun bet which stands
Unless you can tell me a team in the U.K which as a better ratio or 3 teams worldwide, no need to get the law book out, its just a bit of fun, but I bet you too, that you cant find 1.
So in future referance when people say Castleford is not big anothe to be in SL, they do pritty dam well.
