Tour game. Old Australian numbering. 9 = second-row?

| No, not Gomersall.
But thanks for the other ansers. I thought 2 was Crooks but was not sure. According to me list Groves may well have work 9 assuming the list is not in numerical order and has the front row named first. Was Medley a hooker? If so the list now makes sense.
I'd love to know the first one. I guess there's not many people who would remember players from 1958. And yet Karalius is so easy to pick.

No, he was a second rower. He and Roy Powell formed a pretty good back row at Leeds. Roy tackled everything that moved, whilst Medley had amazing pace for a big guy. IIRC during the sprint tests for the 88 tour, he was second only to Offiah.
Medley was never an 80 minute player, sadly, and in the days of two subs could never last. He would have been a lot better in the modern game.
Plus, Mal Reilly (GB coach, and Leeds coach for a bit) did not like him at all.

| The pack listed is Haggerty, Medley, Dixon, Case, Groves, Crooks - in that order. So I'm not sure who played where.

| Yep. And that list has the pack around the other way so I think that Case, Groves and Crooks must have been the front row.

In that case, I think it's Henderson Gill, Mike Ford, Lee Crooks and Garry Schofield in Photo 2.
Paul Medley, Paul Groves and Roy Powell in Photo 3.

| That seems to be right.
I will post a few more from this game and maybe others once I scan some more of these old negatives.

Mal Reilly hated shirkers, showboaters and bottlers and he categorised Medley as all three. I think he had a valid point on all of three accusations. Turned on Medley after the 30-0 loss to Manly on that 1988 GB tour.
Medley's days were numbered at Leeds as soon as Reilly became coach of Leeds by turfing him off to Halifax in exchange for Paul Dixon. Smart deal IMO, even if it did annoy thicko Loiners fans at the time.

My old man reckons it might be hooker Tommy Harris (Hull FC and GB legend) but he's not 100% sure.

| Harris was definitely part of that touring side. But I don't know whether he played in that game. But at least that's a start.

I would think that is the explanation. The Aussie's Clubs used to number backwards with No.8 being lock (loose forward), 9 & 10 second row, 11, 12, 13 being the front row. I think that the hooker wore no.13 instead of 12 as well, but can't be sure. This only applied when the played clubs sides, as the international sides used to wear the same number system as us, even though the Aussie media would often list the side using the club system.
