Yes, the journo has a shallow view: I've read the links and he focuses on results rather than performance which suggests he's a fan but does not have a deep understanding of the modern game.
He's not alone: Phil Clarke is the only one in the British media (now that Tony Rea's gone) who seems to be able to analyse games. Cullen can't and McRae calls the NRL better than he does SL.

Your lack of journalistic knowledge was apparent as soon as you made ridiculous claims about Irvine's inept journalism. The examples you provided links for were 'padding pieces'. Give some examples of RL tactical insight or evocative prose by Irvine....  I have not seen any examples. He is a jobbing hack, clearly more than good enough for the likes of you (no surprise there).
