I still chuckle when I think of that

| Quote: ChampagneSuperRovers "Why hasn't there been any mention anywhere on here, social media, or the commentary team why that clear shove on Tomkins by Connor isn't an offence on the first try? It defies logic, Tomkins doesn't catch the ball but is definitely involved in the play, he catches the knock back for sure if he isn't barged.
Just nonsensical how you can be allowed to shove any player running through on a play like that especially a player who is so close to the ball'"
If Tomkins had his eye on the ball and was running back to help his team mate then I would agree with you. Thaler spotted that Tomkins was looking over his shoulder to see where Jake Connor was and moved sideways so as to obstruct him. Connor simply shoved someone out of the way that was trying to illegally obstruct him and then Tomkins tried to milk a penalty by falling to the floor when he could easily have kept his feet and possibly stopped the try.
Excellent refereeing.

Correct.
The reason Catalans had "given up" was due to the fact Sneyd strangled them of good field position and stopped Gigot from getting them rolling forward. Most of there sets started in there own 20 metre so as the game got away from them so did there game plan as they were forced to gamble in there own half.
If you compare it to the first half when they was allowed to run the ball back they started alot of sets on the 30/40 metre line.
Plus not much point in risking injury when you've already got enough points on the board. I can't believe it's hard to understand.

The complete inability of Sneyd to even try to create anything with a team completely at his mercy shows exactly why he'll never play for a top club here or in the NRL.
I'd say quality half backs who've ever played the game would have more in their locker than just cluelessly booting it into touch with their sides ahead by plenty and the opposition having already clocked off.

It's called game management. Maybe if widnes had more of it they'd have stayed in SL.

| Is JonnoTheIntelectuallyChallenged proven to be a Widnes supporter tho as his posts are suspiciously similar to those of certain other poster/s on here.
But +1 on all the responses regarding game management. With Catalans getting a right royal spanking and some of their thuggish players like Gregory Bird it's entirely professional for Hull players to be winding down the clock by kicking into touch. Last thing you need in the last 20 minutes of a game is to be decapitated by a cheap high shot etc from a player of a team who've been nothing short of humiliated.

| You may have a point, but it wouldn't have been Bird last night.

Sneyd's kicking played a big part in them "clocking off." It choked the life out of Catalans. And Sneyd created lots of stuff on the night. It was a clinic in how to close out a game in knock out rugby. He slowed everything down to his pace and controlled every aspect of that second half.
Changing the subject away from Sneyd for a moment. Early in the thread someone mentioned Catalans tactic of trapping the ball in the scrum to try to win a penalty. I don't know if anyone has noticed it before but for years (perhaps even since Radford took over) we have a system where the scrum half will raise his arm and then drop it to indicate to his teammates that the ball is out. I don't remember us conceding penalties for offsides at the scrum whilst doing this. Indeed Catalans tried it last night a couple of times and it was fruitless. However I can't remember ever seeing another team use the same thing, which I always find surprising because it works so well.

Clearly the guy didn't see many wins for Widnes last year so was just happy enough to see some tries.
