all those mining companies in PNG must be crazy to operate there
they should listen to you'"
You been there Mate?
No?
I thought so.
The mining companies work in armed compounds.
I know a colleague that sells hydraulic hoists, a local turned up at the gate and asked for a job, when he was told there was no vacancies he pointed to a bloke on the gate and said he would have his job, he was told that job was not available so he walked over to him and Machete'd him and said I have his job now?
In the Mining company Lunchroom, disgruntled Wife walks in that believes her man is cheating on her?
Walks up to where he is sitting on a bench table and takes off his head with a Cane knife.
No one blinked and the body and the Wife were removed and the rest kept on eating as if nothing had happened.
Those are facts.

'Dally Messenger' has never left the UK mate
But what you have just described sounds pretty normal for places like Leeds Bradford and Hull

I went to PNG when I took a year out to travel before Uni. It is by far, the most dangerous place I have ever visited. We barely left our hotel compound and ended up cutting our visit short by 3 days just to get the hell out of there. A lot of the locals were friendly, especially when they see you with a rugby league shirt on, but the local gangs where just insane. I dont think a day went by when we didnt hear some screams from our hotel of someone getting raped or stabbed.
I wouldnt go back if you paid me

| Went to PNG for the first time in 1969 (to help put down a bunch of terrorists/freedom fighters depending on your view) last visit in 1998. Our company still provide support for the mines but are considering pulling out because it is to dangerous. The other point is despite the violence PNG would not be a viable option as ther is just no money the country is poor in the extreme. The people have no money (a lot have never seen cash) There are no viewers for the advertisers to aim at therefore they will not invest in the game. The same arguement can be used all over the pacific Islands just not enough disposable income to attract advertisers hence no value from TV revenue. The NRL/FRL will have to subsidise any entry from outside Australia & you know what the answer from the clubs in Sydney will be, they dont like Queensland having sides in the competition.

| Quote: pyeman "Yes union is more popular but isnt the whole exercise about converting this love of union to a love of league as well? how do you know how many they will be able to take to a cup final in say 20 years?'"
I have lived away from the league areas for a big part of my life & played Union a lot more than league, so points to note just because the games started out from the same roots & some aspects of our games are similar to think that they will turn up on mass & be converted is not true. A lot will attend a few games each year but most dont like League for the same way we dont like Union.
I have just watched the Barbarians NZ union game with some work mates. I get bored waiting for a scrum to take place they want more & they like the contest there. I think the number of penalties is a pain they think it is an art to get your oponents to commit an offence & win a penalty. From thier point our scrums are rubbish & the play the ball is a joke! where is the contest for the ball ? they say. I say when is someone going to make a tackle or score a try?. You have to treat the games as two totaly diferent entities. The way to expand is get kids playing & parents watching geting the game into schools & the minds of people in the chosen area. It is a long slow prosses & needs the whole of the game to buy into the idea.

the nrl is looking at a team which plays games in both port moresby and darwin. darwin would help the finances.

www.canberratimes.com.au/news/na ... 61290.aspx
an article on a proposed joint darwin / png team
its good that important nrl people are looking at this
a first step is a team in the queensland cup for a few years then an NRL team is a must
the RFL with poorer finances than us took a chance with wales
with our money we cant afford to neglect a RL mad nation on 6 million
AFL can put teams in places that dont care
weve got very important areas needing a team
id put PNG and nz ahead of adelaide, and just behind perth, queensland and central coast

With your gob you may end up staying there.

Well some of us have spent a lot of time "over there". We have regularly been to games and shockingly are still alive and uninjured. You are talking out of your rear end. Are you one of those cowards that hide behind the Australian High Commission walls trying to make the place sound more dangerous than it is so that you get paid more?

| There are pros and cons to this bid. Unlike any other bid however, these are the most extreme of pros and cons going. The pros would be it could build the economy up for PNG through this venture. More visitors (maybe not significantly more, but still more) more exposure, more sponsorship money. It could be the beginning of changing things over there.
The cons are that it's a third world country. There isn't much money over there. Security is a major risk. The actual club wouldn't make any money for a very very very long time, in fact it would cost an arm and a leg just to set up a stadium etc, not to mention security costs for EVERY game. Most of it would have to be run as a charity.
