| Quote: dally messenger "i think its a smart tactic myself.
some people have talked about rule changes to stop it.
why play to the opposition strength
jamie soward did it a few times against hayne, and we used it again against another side'"
Indeed, this is what is meant by tactics... changing your play based on the strength of the opposition
If you see a strong kick return game in the opposition then the long kick dead so you can set your defence on the 20m is the right way forward
If you see a weakness in the kick return, better to chase well, keep the opposition penned into their own 5/10m and tire their forwards out
As a tactic, it is smart - as a spectacle for the fans, not so much
As I say, I would favour a rule change to a scrum back from the point of the kick (but not till after the 4 Nations!)

| Haven't quins been doing this for years? Im not taking the p1$$ dally but this is stuff any ten year old knows.
Bloody boring, tap on the 30 it should be.
I also think any ball diffused ingoal should be a tap. Im sick of seeing so many tries coming from the same kicks, you could still score from them but your kicking would have to be much better

| oh when we did we kicked the bull dead on the full
indeed the kick passed the dead ball line by 10 m.
when you kick it along the ground the defence might stop it
with a punt over there heads which doesnt land in the field of play they have no chance

Interesting how Roy Masters agrees with me and not dickless...

| Did you notice the word 'return'? No? Didn't think so.
The rest of the article backs up absolutely everything i've said before and that's just the NRL, not discounting SL.
Now go and behave

Did he? Are you sure? Or do you mean "He's the first person I'm aware of that used this idea"? Not the same thing at all, and I'm damn sure I've seen it often enough in the past.
You've got a DIY Teach Yourself RL book there haven't you Dally? Problem is, most of us don't actually need the book, have no need to try and make ourselves look good by quoting from such a volume, and aren't getting laughed at for stating the blindingly obvious.
Perhaps you should have titled this thread 'RL 101"

While it is correct that you stop the back 3 running back at you it is very negative and just coughing up posssesion. Maybe if your winning by 2 or 3 scores do it , but i cant think of any other reason to just cough up possesion. better of taking the DG and getting possesion back rather than just give the ball away.'"
It depends on your field position, if you use that tactic the chances are you're playmakers think you're too far out for an attacking play including a dg. It's especially useful when you've got a limited team like Quins, because deliberately kicking it dead and making them return from the 20 against a set defence is better than trying something clever and giving them either a broken field to return to or a scrum where half your better defenders are out of the line when the ball comes out. Quins used this tactic quite a lot last season with some good results, although there was some whiney cretin sat behind me at the time who couldn't understand that it wasn't a mistake, an annoyance not helped by his friends who appeared to agree with his startling lack of understanding, I sometimes felt like turning round, belting him and saying "look you whiney cretin, we're a rubbish side and this is a good tactic for us to negate the superior attacking capability of our opponents". We haven't done it so much this year, instead we've done weaker kicks and often had the ball returned to us on the 40 or even halfway, there's times when I'd have killed for one of our non-organisers to kick the ball dead and at least take the return from the 20.

Yes, Tony Rea thought it was a good tactic and used it a lot. I only wish we'd been doing it more this season, especially as I moved seats and the whiney cretin doesn't sit behind me any longer.

Dickless loses...
Who woulda thunk it?
Just because you have no clue, don't try and infect everyone else with it.
Roy Masters agrees this man has no dick...

I hope a side I coach gets to play a side you coach if your standard sets are so damn predictable. And splitting the halves is an option, not a statement of fact.

We used this tactic last year to beat Hull FC at home. It was the first home game after we had spanked Wire and it was a pretty wet and windy day.Perfect tactics from the coach...they played the conditions and kept turning the FC pack around. It's nothing new, as you say TR used it a fair few times as well.
