It seems a good time to ask a question that many wonder about but is often unspoken. Namely, is French and English Rugby League benefiting from French teams in the English Pyramid?
The Dragons are no further forward in having French players in their first team than they were in 2006. Even under licensing, the number of French players that were promoted to the first team was negligible, as Catalan prioritised temporary success over longer term growth for French players.
Even Catalans incredible win versus Warrington in the cup final came at the cost to the RFL, of about half a million pounds in lost revenue, from the 12,000 fewer fans in attendance, compared to the 2019 final with all English teams. If Catalan aren’t blooding French players and the English game is footing the bill, then you may question whether the success of Catalans comes at everyone else’s expense. After 15 years the number of French players that will play a major part for Catalan Dragons this season is nowhere near enough. The stark reality is that Catalan are only going to field French players if they are forced to.
Herein then lies the conundrum. French Rugby League and the International game as a whole has the potential to benefit from French teams in Super League but the desire to win now, harms the very possibility of those benefits occurring...............
BTW I didn't write that, just found this major truth as you requested..............
Not sure what either "French" club brings the game that is worth leaving Newcastle and York etc out of Superleague, especially at a time SKY, who don't want French clubs are looking to cut the money heavily......

No truth, speculative and off topic, nothing new.

There we go, you can't help yourself with a little baiting can you.
If you want an anti-French argument try Gausch and Sarrazain, both these guys have a policy of finding the best players that can for their Superleague squads completely at the expense of French players.
They know if they did play French Teams then they'd be relegated pretty quickly, that Catalans at least are in Superleague clearly blocks a place for the likes of Bradford, York, Newcastle and Featherstone. When a club was being chosen to take the spare place the dreamers all screamed for Toulouse for the "French derby" not that there would be much French about it at all.
This is completely on topic given Lenegan and Pearson would whistle Catalans out like a shot, but as we know it only takes the odd vote against a motion for it to be scuppered so Uncle Gary can keep them in.
Anyway let's see if you are capable of getting it that SKY have just arranged for the English TV deal to be slashed big time. If you think that Toulouse would be a great idea for promotion to take a place alongside Catalans giving SKY even less English clubs how do you justify Faux French teams in Superleague?? They just don't produce the likes of Jean Capdouze anymore
Over to you........

I think you'll find Lenagan is very pro French.
Photographed at Toulouse,for inexplicable reasons,and more than pleased to play against Catalans,horror of horrors,in Spain - https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/sport/r ... ts-2432403.
Even when their Academy sides take players from well beyond their immediate catchment area there really ain't that many Hull born players in a hull derby game,or Wigan born players in a Wigan v Saints game.
All that after 125 years and lots of money from a broadcast deal.

Come on, Saints and Wigan produce more than their share of very good quality players.
If you need any proof, just take a peek at the Catalan squad, it's jammed full of Wiganers

I think you may need to change employment law or, at the very least change the rules on who can play for Catalan / Toulouse before you can "force" either of them to include more French born players in their respective squads.
However, it would be mighty unreasonable to allow the English SL clubs to have a squad with very few homegrown players and yet insist that Catalan must be all French.
IF the sport was serious about trying to have France as worthy international opponents for mid season games with England, there would have to be a huge levelling up exercise in the French domestic game and I think that we both know that this isn't going to happen anytime soon and probably not at all.
The sport needs some plan on how to move forward and right now and for the majority of the last 60/70 years, it hasn't had one and as a result, the game is going backwards.

| Not sure changing brand to 'Combined Nations All Stars' is a great idea. The Exiles brand worked in my opinion, it was influenced by Union's successful Barbarians concept and the shirts looked good and the South Sea Islands are generally a close knit bunch and seemed to enjoy the chance to play alongside their mates from other clubs. It was also a good shop window to get a Tonga/Samoa/Fiji/Cook Islands call up.
Adding a few French/Welsh/Irish/Scottish players in muddies the concept a bit for me and not sure what we will get out of say seeing Fages, Grace and Coote play we already know they are top level players. The team will play different tactics for a different coach so doesn't particularly help their own national teams when they return.
And as said before why this is being played on an SL weekend is anyones guess. If bigger crowds are allowed most fans of other clubs won't bother if their team has a game that weekend.

In the Grand Final there were 8 Wigan born players in the Wigan side, 2 in the Saints side and 2 St Helens born players.
8 academy graduates in both sides.

| Regarding the mid season international, I don’t agree with the idea of a cap of a certain amount of players from each team. There wasn’t one before, so there shouldn’t be one now to bail out teams.

Probably because the game is being crammed into an already congested season.
It would be great to include some players that have missed out on England selection and see what they can do, with a promise of possible inclusion in the World Cup squad, which would certainly make it competitive.

I accept a successful English team is good for the game over here but this fixture is nothing but a money spinner for the RFL. It devalues the league for a start and supporters have already missed enough without there star players going to play in a pointless game. Success of England in the world Cup does not revolve around this game, half the starting line up won't even play in it anyway.
