| Quote: Him "Don't agree with that. To start with there haven't been many times that Sinfield's not played and certainly not many big games.
In my opinion we've played our best rugby in some of the playoffs and grand finals and he's been a major part of those performances. I think you see Sinfield's influence more when it's a close game. The 2004, 2008, 2009, 2012 & 2015 Grand Finals I think he was a major reason why Leeds won those games.'"
I was thinking more last season when the young number 6 (Sutcliffe I think) was playing when Sinfield was dropped.

| It's great for the sport that Sinfield is nominated, but unless there's an uncharacteristic show of non-partisan voting from the RL community, I can't see him winning; we're far too tribal for that.

This ^
And you can bet that any narrative would reference "Kevin Sinfield, the Headingly Carnegie RU player"

| I said on other thread that I'd love Kev to win.
But in terms of achievement this year you can't top beating Wladimir Klitschko in Germany to become the unified, linear and undisputed Heavyweight champion of the world.

| The current world rankings of the guys Murray beat in Davis Cup singles this year
10th
11th
15th
16th
18th
48th
80th
109th (that one was in the final)
Is that really that impressive when you take the GB specs off? The way they went on about it you'd think he beat a Serbian inspired Djokovic team or a Swiss side with Federer in it.....but he didn't

He's not the undisputed champion, Wilder has the WBC belt.

| the most impressive thing about his run was that he played 3 matches back to back in every tie winning every single one and obviously pretty much won the trophy himself.If you watched the tie against france when he played against simon he was on fumes but somehow managed to get over the line. Tennis is an extremely gruelling game at times and to what he has done is pretty special, regardless of his opposition.imo he deserves the award as much as anyone.If Sinfield gets top 3 here somehow, that would be a great achievement imo.

| Murray can only play who’s in front of him, he made a conscious effort to assist G.B. to win the Davis Cup & it paid off.
Due mainly to one player an eighty year old drought is over, yet he still finished as No 2 in the world rankings. If he wins it then it’s thoroughly deserved.
Would Sinfield have been in the running if he hadn’t swapped codes, I’m not so sure? But at least it’s given the Loiners a last hurrah for their immortal redeemer & a slim chance of a final cherry on their 2015 cake.

For what its worth, the criteria for SPOTY are:
"The Panel will select a short list of sportspeople for the main award on the basis of the following criteria:
Reflects UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage;
Represents the breadth and depth of UK sports;
and
Takes into account 'impact' over and beyond the sport or sporting achievement in question"
www.bbc.co.uk/sport/sports-personality/34727935
Accounting for that, then Sinfield's laudable achievements at club level this season might put him below those that compete on an international stage, but its was nice he was included this time around. If he doesn't win some might blame McNamara for not giving him a cameo appearance in the final test match.....
Now for the public to decide.

True, but if Wigan, Saints, Warrington and Hudds hadn't bothered competing in this year's SL would Leeds winning the treble been that impressive? Not saying he doesn't deserve praise for winning it but when rating it against others you have to consider the strength of the field the nominee was up against.
Quote: The Devil's Advocate "Would Sinfield have been in the running if he hadn’t swapped codes, I’m not so sure?.'"
I don't think that makes any difference and think he'd still have been in had he just retired (had he carried on playing for the Rhinos in 2016 I don't think he would've as it wouldn't have had the 'story' of a swansong). We aren't talking about a guy who joined Bath or Saracens or Wasps and could be knocking on the door for England soon. It's a guy who is just giving it a little end of career try for a year or so in a lower league with a northern club and has played a sum total of three games, I highly doubt that RU swayed them.

| Surprised that Joe Root didn't make the list after being man of the series in The Ashes victory, maybe there's a BBC conspiracy against cricket since they lost the free to air broadcast rights.

Yes he is. He has the most belts and is linear champ.
Larry Holmes gave up his wbc belt in the 80's and took the Ibf belt but was still the linear and considered I disbuted champ.
