Quote: Always behind the sticks "Whilst his tries in a season record may have gone, I agree with previous posters about Paul Charlton being the best GB full back of the last 50 years and I was going to mention him in my earlier post but I thought that people would think that I was being greedy as a Salford fan!! Glad to see Ken Gill get a mention but he didn't really re-produce his form at international level.'"

Charlo was the Rolls Royce of full backs, it was a pleasure to watch him as a child for Workington (before and after his move to Salford). He was the first to adopt the modern full back style of play, hitting the ball at speed from deep and accelerating away. Tough as teak as well, rock solid in defence. It is testament to how good he was that when the great Graeme Langlands retired, St George wanted Charlo as his replacement but he turned them down.

Quote: knockersbumpMKII "Whitely was a better ball handler & had a tad more pace/better feet than Karalius, in todays games JW would be the pick at 13 but I went for VK at 13 and JW at 12 which is were he often played for GB.
I can't see past Jonathan Davies at full back, he could play anywhere in the backline and would have been fantastic at 6 too. As good as Tomkins is, he just isn't even a close match compared to Davies IMO.
As for the inclusion of Offiah in many people's teams, yes he had a lot of pace but he was the worst GB defender in any position in my memory..Sure primarily you want clinical finshers which he was but there were equally great finishers with just as much speed whom were tenatious and better defenders by a very long distance..'"

I agree with much of what you say. However there are more candidates for full back than stand off and I would put Jiffy at stand off with someone like Paul Charlton at full back. Jiffy would be in my side. The question is. Where would I play him? With regard to Offiah, a great winger who did not shine at international level. I would love to have seen him up against mad Mick Sullivan. Sullivan would have frightened the life out of him. He was such a psychopath he frightened me, and I was only watching. He would be in the mix for my nomination as winger though.

Quote: Dally "In my opinion, Mal Reilly wasn't in the same class as people like Karalius, Whiteley or Turner. Widnes alone produced 4 better than Reilly in my view in the period under consideration - Karalius, Laughton, Nicholls (although he tended to play second row later on) and Adams. I've already expressed by view on Karalius. Laughton was a better footballer than Reilly. Adams too (plus rock solid in defence). Nicholls, I believe, was GB's most capped forward at one stage.'"

There is another name I should have mentioned Doug Laughton. He had a career threatening injury which caused an hiatus in his career. When he came back he was still great but I don't think as good as prior to his injury.
George Nicholls, a superb tackler and workhorse, lacked the pace of the other contenders. In the modern game where loose forwards are used as third props he would probably excel. Another Widnes great, Frank Myler, would not make my team because of his lack of pace.

He was deceptively fast although I would agree not having blistering pace. Like Tony Myler he was very strong. He did win captain the last GB side to beat Australia in a series, 10 years after he was in a world cup winning team.

Dally, I respect your view on Roger Millward, but I can assure you that the Australian fans feared him. I am not a HKR fan,for the record.

When Roger the Dodger paired with Tommy Bishop the two were a dazzling duo who ran rings around the Australian defenders.

Frank Myler was one hard man with not a little skill who I much admired and with more pace and speed off the mark he would have been the perfect stand off but, unfortunately, he did not have the pace.

Still scored alot of tries from far out though. So, must have had some pace!

Having thought about it, since I picked Murphy at Scrum half I have to go for Vinty at Loose Forward. Vinty was an assassin who combined well with Murphy, his club mate. Johnny Whiteley was a better footballer though and he has to take the other second row spot. Same conclusion. Slightly different rationale. My pack:-
Alan Prescott
Colin Clarke
Brian mcTigue
Dick Huddart
Johnnny Whiteley
Vinty Karalius
Subs
Cliff Watson
Derek Turner
Paul Sculthorpe

I agree. He was a player who I admired and who commanded the respect of friend and foe alike but compared to Jiffy or Murphy for speed off the mark what would you say? If i wanted a skilful hard man with some pace I would go for Frank but, at international level, the forwards should be supplying the grunt.

Ellery Hanley had great pace off the mark, so maybe you should pick him? In fact I would guess his speed off the mark was greater than the two you listed! He was, as I recall, the quickest over 10 yards in the GB squad in his era - including Offiah.

I am surprised that he was the fastest off the mark in the GB squad purely from what I have seen of him. I still do not think he would edge Murphy or Jiffy in their prime for speed off the mark..
He was a true great though and would be in most people's squad but where would you play him? Would it be at winger, centre, stand off or loose forward and, of course, the money would have to be right.

That's a massive accolade for Clarke to be in this company. Good as he was, was he better than Stephenson (my selection), Ashcroft, Bridges, Fisher, Ward, Dermott, Cunningham, Roby?

Despite the the gap in years,Stephenson and Roby were very similar players. I have come to the conclusion this is an impossible thread. Just let's be happy that we have seen these great players in our lifetime. Happy New Year to all RL Fans.

I tried to pick a pack which was skilful, pacy and aggressive. Stephenson was a great hooker, particularly in loose play, but he did not like the rough stuff. In the more sanitised modern game he may be OK but in his era there was plenty of dirty play which he did not like. As a wire fan I have many fond memories of Ashcroft. He always put in a full shift and never took a backward step, as I am sure Mr Stephenson could attest to, but he lacked the pace of Clarke. Bridges was a contested scrum hooker. Won more than his share of ball but not that good in the loose. I do not think Fisher or Ward had Clarke's pace. Dermott was light weight. Cunningham and Roby are serious contenders but between Clarke, Stephenson, Cunningham and Roby I think Clarke just shades it with his combination of pace and physicality. I would, however be happy with any of the others in my pack.
