| I do hope the Leeds fans enjoyed the Schofield years as much as I enjoyed the Edwards years.

| Quote: jimlav "The irony of this is that the same people who are saying Schofield is better than Edwards are the same type of people who say Tomkins is too greedy and they would rather have a Sinfield type player in their team.
p.s Edwards by a distance, and my father (a saints fan) laughed when he saw this and said no contest, Edwards.'"
That's utter gash, I can't stand Tomkins and his attitude/antics, maybe he does hold onto the ball too long at times but I wouldn't say he was greedy at all. If he thinks he can do stuff that doesn't need his team mates at any given point or they can't interpret how he is going to play in broken field play that's niether here nor there with his level of ability.
I'm sure your father is a lovely fella but he knows knack all about the relative qualities of the players mentioned here in terms of absolute skill/talent level if he thinks Edwards was better so your anecdotal evidence is futile...

Must be all those tries Edwards scored against Australia which convinced him, eh?

I enjoyed the Schofield years on the international stage against the best in the world far more than the Edwards years. You?

| Perspectives of Wigan fans never cease to amaze me. Take Shaun Edwards out of that absolutely dominant Wigan team and compare his and Schofield's performances in a more controlled experiment with same-standard NRL and GB teams.
Conversely, if Edwards never existed and you put someone like Graham Steadman in that Wigan team, he'd have won just as many medals as Edwards and there'd be Wigan fans on here swearing blind that it's not even up for debate that Steadman was a better player than Schofield.

Half a dozen good International games vs fifty major honours - domestic and non-domestic (3 x WCC Final wins, one of which tore Brisbane apart on their own ground in front of over 50,000).
Yeah, course you did.

Absolutely, I did.
International RL is far more important than domestic club games IMO, and it also separates world class players from the more ordinary domestic players. In this particular example, it distinguishes world class players like Schofield from domestic club class players like Edwards who failed to shine at international level because they were only domestic club class players.

| I don't think anyone is disputing that Edwards wasn't a great player who won trophy after trophy.
But Schofield was better and performed home, Oz and at International level

| To those blinkered Wigoon fans who harp on about Edwards far greater haul of domestic honours than Schofield, does that mean that the contributions of by the likes of Hanley, Gregory, Goodway, etc (all vastly better players) have been over rated then, because Edwards genius apparently won them?
As a non Wigan fan the players I feared when facing them never included Edwards or the thought that he'd rip us to bits. Sure he would make hay if his pack was well on top but in the rare close games it was others that pulled them through.
You really don't know how unrespected Edwards is in Australia. Being a leading British half back (which he undoubtedly was) does not automatically rank anyone in the ARL/NRL. Indeed he found his level there pretty quickly, back up on a good team and possibly good enough to start with side near the bottom of the table.
If anything Schofield's ability to shine in some poor teams is another plus for him.

| Edwards was a professional player who stood on the shoulders of giants.
This was shown most plainly in is abject failure to make an impression down under, when he jointed Balmain. This was in marked contrast to other British halves of the time such as Gregory, Myler & Schofield.
So for me there is no contest.
Schofield was by far the better player.
NB: i would say that Edwards was the more professional.

Indeed.
And Edwards couldn't even dislodge this bloke from the Balmain halfback spot.

| I would put Edwards on a par with Danny McGuire in terms of ability where as Schofield is more like Jonathan Thurston. The difference between a good half back and a great half back.
