| Quote: Jonesy "NRL players who have moved to other sports in recent years.
Union
Berrick Barnes
Nathan Blacklock
Willie Carne
Ryan Cross
Paul Franze
Sam Harris
Wise Kativerata
Ben MacDougall
Craig Wing
Mat Rogers
Wendell Sailor
Clinton Schifcofske
Timana Tahu
Brad Thorn
Lote Tuqiri
Andrew Walker
Lesley Vainikolo
Sonny Bill Williams
Craig Gower
Mark Gasnier
Tasesa Lavea
AFL
Karmichael Hunt
Izzy Folau
Many of the above were State of Origin standard or Test players.
Luckily Oz Rugby Union have decided that most NRL backs do not suit their style of game and are unlikely to poach many more in the future.'"
rocky elsom
wycliff palu
will chambers just returned
the bigger issue is clearly Super Leagues raids on the nrl and stopping this but union has mainly gone for quality over quantity and has certainly had a detrimental impact on the nrl and the quality of origin with so many origin stars taken in their prime and waiting around for new stars to reach that level.

| on the news tonight Israel Folau is being paraded by the AFL for their upcoming match this weekend.
the AFL has estimated his signing has created million in free advertising for their sport as it hopes to push into western sydney, an area which is of course a RL hotbed.
clearly anything the NRL can do to raise its TV deal to retain its own players is to be applauded, provided it doesnt radically change the game
putting in a 30 second ad after tries, kicks to touch etc without delaying live coverage doesnt seem to change the game at all, and if it gives us $70 million more pa than im all in favour of it

I can live with a few ads if it is on free to air TV, better than not seeing the games at all.
Channel Nine are dead set mugs in how they have used the League contract and I gave up on Pay TV some time ago.

| Stacey Jones and Jonesy Apologies for playing down the numbers without thinking about them too hard... clearly.
Indeed, anything the NRL can do to get more money in is good, but pretty please don't ruin the product.
I run the yellow and as such in my side, I go to the goal kicker. I'd say it'd take a minute or even two, to go from scoring a try to getting boot to ball. So if they can squeeze a commercial or two in that time, then fine. Just please never stop a game deliberately for an ad.

Its all good Rooster, most of us want what is best for the game in the end.

Have a word with yourself. This isn't TFC, but instead a forum where your inane ramblings and name calling have no place. I commented that the NRL clubs were becoming too reliant on TV cash and some were praying for a bigger deal in future........the above story from Sydney would seem to back up my assumption
Quote: eels fan "Wests Tigers director David Trodden, who is the spokesman for the clubs, said something needed to be done to make the clubs financially sustainable after 15 of the 16 indicated they would make an operating loss this season'"
I agree with the assertions from "the joneses" that if it doesn't impact on the natural flow of the game, then so be it, but once you open this up, it will be very hard to put a lid back on it IMO.

NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg |

| As a % NRL clubs get a lot less from the TV money than AFL clubs do. The next deal will see an increase in salary cap and an increase in grant to match it. I predict around $5.5mill salary cap and a $6mill grant. This will see most clubs financially ok. Still lots of work to do on the corporate and membeship side of clubs incomes but hopefully the ARLC will help them along.

| gutternuffy, post as many unrelated links as you like, but as usual, you lie and post BS.
So prove these things you said was wrong with RL in Australia mr know all living in NZ from Ireland?
Quote: GutterKnowNothing "....not in the UK, you are correct.
..................but in Australia, where the size of the TV deal is EVERYTHING over the state of stadiums, the youth development or lack of it and at all costs, and everything must be bigger than that of other sports, they will bend over for TV and gladly change the rules in return for a quick fix.
Events earlier this year pointed to clues as to exactly how much a great number of NRL teams are banking on a much bigger cheque for TV.....some have bet the house on it and can't afford to lose.
Rooster will correct me if I am wrong, but the only reason for this is revenue......it will bring nothing more to the game.'"
Back it up with facts instead of posting lies.

yeah i hate nine, the way they pander to AFL and fail to show RL in melbourne at reasonable times despite the fact that every time they have done so they have gotten far better ratings than the Swans get in sydney with channels 10 and 7 pushing them to the hilt
if channel 10 to get the TV rights it will be a breath of fresh air for the game
RL is the only thing keeping nine from sinking to 3rd network
heck if they lost the nrl theres a good chance theyll go broke

those are minimum figures based on a 1 billon TV deal
with competition from 3 networks 1.4 billion including naming rights and new media could well mean a salary cap of 7 million and a grant of 8 million
currenly a few NRL clubs never spend full salary cap like the warriors and sometimes tigers
ensuring every club can spend full salary cap and be healthy is very important for the game
our top players should be on a minimum of 1.5 million pa including 3rd party deals, they get paid far too little vs other sports
if the salary cap does go to 6 million i can imagine some desperate clubs could even pay 2 million pa to lure a player like thurston or cronk to turn around their clubs
thats the kind of money they deserve

have you heard of the Premier League ? or NFL? or AFL?
TV deals are a LARGE part of income in our moden game
throw in stuff like new media rights and these contracts are a significant part of any sports income
so its funny you only single out NRL clubs are being reliant too much on TV income
how far would PL clubs go without it?
try and be sensible please.

| I just got back from Auckland earlier this morning after my team played against the Vulcans. We played at Mt Smart before the Toyota Cup and NRL games and one thing happened that I haven't experienced before.
At half time both sides stayed on the pitch. Then Players got up and into position for the second half. But we had to wait. What we had to wait for was actually a Sky TV bloke on the sideline to give the ref the thumbs up as they were in an ad break. So maybe TV already does have an influence more than we know.
