| Coverage of sports without a commercial value is exactly what the BBC should be doing. Not chucking millions at something ITV or another channel could show for free.
That said, if anyone from Radio Leeds is reading this, I've stopped listening to your coverage and gone to Yorkshire Radio. I want commentary, not inane Facebook messages and tweets massaging the ego of the presenter. Even John Boyd was better!

| Quote: AdmiralHanson "It was interesting to note on the day that the campaign was lauched by the RFL, in an attempt to protect local radio coverage of Rugby League, that our local BBC news magazine programme (Look North) could afford to fly a reporter and cameraman (and I assume perhaps other crew ?) across the Atlantic to interview (in person) Sir Alan Ayckbourn.
This is the same Sir Alan Ayckbourn who spends most of his time not more than 90 mins drive away from the BBC studios in Leeds, at his theatre in Scarborough.
- Why not record the interview BEFORE he jetted off to New York
- Why not do the interview by satellite / video link from the States
Was this a legitimate use of licence payers funding or yet another shameless waste of money by the BBC ? Maybe a Christmas shopping trip passing itself off as a news item, perhaps ?
I trust that if they have money to burn on such live junkets, which at this time of year must have run in to thousands (if not tens of thousands), all of which could have been better served by being spent on the game we love.'"
rlAndy Wilson on the ramifications for our game.rl
[i'The reports I've read suggest that BBC Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland won't have to make such savage cuts. So the people of Wales will presumably continue to enjoy excellent coverage of Glamorgan's cricket team and rugby union, whereas us northerners may lose coverage of Yorkshire, Lancashire and rugby league.'[/i

I actually really like that idea Chris, but I can already guess what would happen - the BBC currently hold radio coverage rights for RL, and would insist upon maintaining their exclusivity, despite the fact that the local producers and schedulers have little to no interest in it.
Still ... we can but dream ...

But are those rights only for live coverage and commentary? If so, a rugby league magazine programme would be feasible, wouldn't it?

| Not a chance from me.
At one time Radio Leeds gave decent coverage to all the 'pro' teams in its area. Now it merely helps to perpetuate the myth that only SL is of any importance. On a Sunday afternoon they give vastly greater amounts of airtime to reruns of the commentary of the Friday night's Leeds game than to reports/comments on all of the area's Championship games.
If Radio Leeds disappeared completely I would not miss it.

I don't really know the ins and outs of the licensing agreements to be honest. Once upon a time we did semi-regular magazine shows on online broadcast via rlfans, and we never had any complaints about it from the RFL or rights holders. But then again, at the time we were much smaller and less 'on the radar' than now.

Radio Cumbria, Radio Manchester and Radio Merseyside couldn't be further away from that description.

| Radio Manchester's RL coverage is absolutely top notch IMO. Of course, precedence for live commentary is inevitably given to the ongoing SL games, and I can understand why that would be frustrating for 'non-SL fans', but they do have reporters at all the championship games who give frequent updates on those games.

I think we're just unlucky in West Yorkshire that our BBC station is so poor for rugby league compared to others. The repeating of a commentary is just cheap and, more importantly, lazy. Why would you want to listen again to a commentary from two nights ago? Not as if it's a game from years ago.
It makes you pine for the day of Boydy taking no crap from listeners and Kevin Maguire phoning in. That's how bad it is.
Yorkshire Radio make them sound like amateurs, on probably a fraction of the budget.
