Regardless of how much of a twonk he is, I still want him to perform well for England.

Likewise, but he's not making it easy for himself is he? People don't hate him because he's good, they hate him because he's a smarmy, arrogant, childish little scrote. He thinks he's so funny, but those kind of characters in sport tend to have things happen to them somewhere down the line, which they won't like and which will make them think a little.
Wigan as a club could solve this quickly. Publicly announce he's been fined and given a warning. Regardless of how the childish Wigan fans on here will think it's such a cool thing to do, it's embarassing, for him, his club and the sport. He comes out weekly with these statements that the abuse doesn't bother him, but he makes it so clear that it does and he cannot handle it. The v isn't the most serious thing in the world, but it shows he isn't dealing with it well. How long before it's a bloke in a pub he reacts to or someone in the street? Along with Wigan's responsibility to deal with the issue, Tomkins himself also has a responsibility to come out and apologise for it.

Ian Millward got sacked for gross misconduct. I think that it’s only fair that Wigan do the same with Sam. It’ll be interesting to see who takes on Sam Tomkins. Only downside is that Millward was a shadow of his former self after he left Saints!

| He stuck two fingers up to some morons - big deal.
It's no wonder he's considering a move to the dark side with RL supporters wanting his nads on a plate for stepping on cracks in the pavement.
FFS, he hasn't slit anyones throat!

No one is saying it's very serious. But the sport tries to present itself as a family sport and there is not really room in that for sticking the v up at the crowd.

| Absolute idiot, if the precedent wasn't already there to show he shouldn't get a ban, I'd want him to be banned. Sadly, if he is now it would be just as farcical.
But congratulations to those who got a rise out of him, as if we hadn't got enough bad press for booing our own players on international duty, we've managed to make the player the media has been in love with for the past week look like a complete pr/ck on the biggest stage for rising to the idiots that did it in the first place.
That said, he is a professional, there's no excusing him at all, but that doesn't make the idiot 'fans' we have any better either.

He'd be crucified on the dark side if he behaved like he does currently - they even get there knickers in a twist when Ashton swan-dives in for tries.
Good player but he really does need to grow up.

It's been a long day - what is the precedent for not getting a ban?

Didn't make any offensive gestures at the fans though did he - just got a bit excited and jumped on to a wall

This is a good post.
If it wasn't for the fact many players have made gestures in the past (The Lee Smith and Ryan Bailey ones are the most recent I can think of, and the apparent Kyle Eastmond one as well), I'd want him to get a ban.
The problem with that is it destroys what I want most of all as a Rugby League fan... CONSISTENCY in discipline.

Don't get me doubting myself please, it was a while ago and I don't recall it being on TV....
I'm sure other fans would be happy to provide examples, I've heard King and Eastmond as examples, I'm not so sure to be quite frank as I wasn't there and not sure if they were confirmed.
It isn't new sadly, and I'd be glad if he is made an example of over this, could do him some good to know that the people off the pitch really should mean nothing to him when he is on it. But he really isn't the first to do this, maybe just the first to be stupid enough to be caught doing it in a final on the BBC.
