| All though I'm glad we kept the traditional Kingston Rovers I have grown accustomed to some clubs nicknames now although I hardly ever refer to teams by them, I don't think they are ridiculous.
I think Blue Sox and Sharks were Shiite though.

I've never quite understood why Sharks is seen this way. Blue Sox goes without saying and Barracudas was dreadful (but not as bad as Arena 84). But Hull Sharks? Hull is a port after all.

| Quote: craigizzard "Rhinos is a bloody ridiculous name, but somehow it's done a good job of sticking so a fogey like me will just shrug their shoulders and consider that very few seem get poor by underestimating the taste of the general public.
The thing about nicknames in US sports is that the nicknames almost always had some sort of geographical or cultural connection to the city or franchise involved (Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Steelers, Patriots, Celtics, Saints, Yankees, Orioles and so on). Obviously the RL marketeers who think they're copying the Americans instead prefer random out-of-context animal generators.'"
The other thing is that the Yanks don't have an obsession with alliteration. With RL, particularly the further down you get, it seems just a case of picking a big animal or synonym for "Warrior" that begins with the same letter as the town / district name.

Harlequin or Arlecchino in Italian, Arlequin in French, and ArlequÃn in Spanish is the most popular of the zanni (sic) or comic servant characters from the Italian Commedia dell'arte and its descendant, the Harlequinade.
The name of Harlequin derives from Old French Hellequin, leader of la maisnie Hellequin, thought to be related to the Old English Herla, a character often identified with Woden.[1][2]

| Hate all the nicknames that have come in since super league started its far too american for me. The old style nicknames are miles better because they more often than not mean something and say something about the team/where they come from. I understand that its all about the family package these days, but cheesy nicknames aren't for me.
And for me Crusaders is just taking the Michael!!!

Thankyou sir! thats it, i had a vague memory of it. A specific style of theatre rather than a specific piece. i was almost there.

| Quote: Harrigan "Rhinos has stuck very well in Leeds and I think the majority of people, no matter what generation, refer to us as the Rhinos. Funnily enough I refer to Warrington as Wire though and I'm only 27. Wigan should be Wigan and I can't recall ever saying I'm off to watch The Rhinos vs the Warriors. A bit like Cas too. Bradford like Leeds though I refer Yo them more often than not as the Bulls. They are 2 of the good ones.'"
Yeah, I'd go along with that. As a Bulls' fan I always think of the Rhinos, but though I often talk about the Bulls, strangely I still say I'm going to the Northern.
Like you I always think of Wire not Wolves and also Cas not Tigers, Wakey (or Trinity) never Wildcats, Salford not Reds, and Wigan not Warriors, though it's Giants not Hudds. Why things are the way round they are I don't know.
