| Quote: SmokeyTA "So you think a club in the heartlands, surrounded by a strong amateur game is at the same starting point as an expansion club like quins, who have had to create an strong amateur game?
Quins, in terms of spreading the game and getting people playing, have done things Cas can only dream of. They have, in their many guises, created and built a amateur game which now produces international players.
Yes the club need to improve their attendances, 1766 really isnt good enough, but they are playing catch up at first grade level (and this isnt something they will do in the championships) and that is only one part of a very difficult puzzle. The fact is RL in London is excelling in some key and important areas, this isnt usurped by the fact the Quins club are poorly attended.'"
How much media attention does the game get down there exactly? I hardly ever see any of this mentioned on SSN or any other channel for that matter. The fact is that RL is, and always has been a Northern sport and if you don't believe that then find me stastical evidence to say otherwise. The fact is that RL in London cannot compete with the football sides that are around there, let alone the fact that it is a hotbed for RU.

Look at widnes, they are a true rugby league town with a good crowd base, their own stadia but can't get a look in for past god knows how many years.
While the Quins being in super league has done wonders for the game a grassroots, just think how it must have hit the grassroots level in towns like widnes.'" Probably annoyed, but there's no reason to, crowds are not the be-all and end-all and in fact as long as finances are in order they don't really matter for anything at all. I doubt Quins have harmed youth development in Widnes, considering Widnes's U18s won their league. Quins aren't the only club stopping Widnes from being in Super League. Instead of slating them we should be looking at ways they can improve, because if they got their act together they could be an extremely valuable asset.

SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!:9005.jpg |

They are anonymous to most others as they play under the same name as one of the most well-known Union sides in the world. The current Quins set up is absolutely ridiculous, I fully believe if they had their own stadium in an area that they were able to properly market and develop, they could easily achieve good crowds. There's no reason why they shouldn't, people from London are no different from anyone else and there's a heck of a lot of them. Despite what anyone says, 'Quins RL' is not and never will be an attractive proposition for fans. I probably wouldn't go and watch if I lived in London.'"
So you are saying that the actual name of the club would decide if you wanted to watch them ? Amazing , if they changed their name to ' Richmond ' their gates would increase ?
What you are suggesting is ' if they owned their own stadium in a large town , small city with no other sports being played in it or near it they might be able to get better crowds , no sh.t Sherlock , so where should they move to ?

| ..and it was small as it always is in London.......
But lose London and you lose a large % of your Sky money which keeps the game afloat, hence why the RFL are so keen to keep it going
And we are 2 from 2 and 3rd in the league!!

The problem I see is that I know folk who live in the middle of London and are Union fans. They won't go to watch the Union side play because The Stoop is awkward to get to. If the Union lot won't go, what chance does RL have?

Then surely the club should declare the real attendance and celebrate the fact that their promotion worked.

No, where have I said that? It is a factor though, it's obviously going to hamper their marketing, any casual or uneducated people who saw any mention of 'Harlequins' would associate it with Union, it's not a marketable brand.
I don't know where they should move to. There is a clear need to move though if there is any possibility of it. They got better crowd as London Broncos despite being completely Australian-oriented, I think if the current club was still at Griffin Park rather than the Stoop then crowds would be a heck of a lot better than they currently are.

And this is who's fault exactly ?
Mine , Leigh fans , Fax fans , Barrow maybe ?
Why didn't they market themselves ?

I dont doubt RL has always been a northern sport. For a long time it was run by the most backwards parochial fools you could wish for. And they almost killed the game.
That isnt however an argument to say it always will be.
