Last year Westwood broke Green's face in the 3rd minute of the game. It was broken as badly as Sam Burgess last week. The referee put that on report, no one got sent off and the game developed into the best GF ever played.

The point being there is no consistency in the refereeing, Phil Bentham is the worst referee on the planet and he ruined that match for 70,000 spectators plus the TV audience. Flower deserved a punishment, but the Saints should also have been equally as punished.

I think the problem is the offence was committed against an unconscious player, and I can't remember any other example of this.
As such, there was a massive risk of serious brain injury. A bit of ear-biting or anal finger-poking, however serious, don't carry the risk of serious injury that punching an unconscious man on the floor does.

I retracted that last bit straight away as I knew I'd over stepped the mark.

There is no doubt that the Flower incident is more serious by several magnitudes and it wasn't me who was making the comparison. loiner81 was still bleating about the unfairness of the Hardaker ban and subsequent second investigation and needed correcting (FWIW no charges were made the second time because of lack of evidence, not clear cut proof that Hardaker didn't do anything).

Flower, no doubt, will get a ban rather larger than five games.

I've been determined not to comment on what went on before the final punch, it doesn't go anywhere near justifying Flower punching an unconscious man. However, this seems a case of not knowing your elbow from your forearm. The elbow is the pointy bit not touching Flower's face. The forearm is the bit that is.

Talk about splitting hairs. Whether it's a forearm or elbow it's illegal. Nobody said it justifies what follows, but plenty of people refuse to believe it happened at all, hence the post. Some people simply want to believe that Ben Flower did this totally unprovoked as instructed by his coach, rather than as an idiotic over reaction to something Hoahai did.
