Offering reduced price tickets is only sustainable if those who bought those tickets are willing to buy full price tickets later on, arguably cheap tickets are an immediate solution to a long term problem. Look on this board about people only buying tickets because they are great value. You want evidence of this ask the Wigan and Quins board. Even the full price tickets are great value not sure what other international event would include two matches involving the best three sides in the world for these prices.
large amounts of cheap tickets and relatively heavy marketing are not sustainable. What needs to happen is those attracted by these offers come back and are willing to attend other RL events and matches are normal prices.

Charging an extra fiver for 20k less tickets in Wigan and claiming "success" is short sighted.'"
I don't disagree, and I think going to Wembley is a risk worth taking, but the bottom line is very important especially in a cash strapped sport like ours. So long as the loss (if there is one) is manageable then there's no problem.

Hi Derwent, can I introduce you to the well-known business concept of rla loss leaderrl? I can? Cool.
Derwent, please meet rlloss leaderrl. rlLoss leaderrl, this is rlDerwentrl ... apparently you've not met before.
(Disclaimer: Loss Leader may have nothing to do with Wembley, it's just an assumption on somebody's part that there will be a loss on the event)

Perhaps you could tell me which other profitable sales this is a loss leader to then ? Loss leaders are fine if people are going to buy other products with a higher margin - so where is our offset ?
I think it is you that needs to learn the difference between loss leader pricing and knockdown pricing.

You "hope" that, in planning the 4 Nations international series, the RFL did some careful pricing calculations? So perhaps they [ididn't[/i, you think? WTF else might they have done - thrown darts at a dartboard, or picked their favourite lucky numbers?

| Regarding losing money on events to gain sales later down the line.
Anyone care to tell me how much we lost in 2000 on the WC and sales developed post WC?
Yep, been there done that, begging people to come to the game paying peanuts always ends in tears.
Hence why 40k at tenner a pop is certainly not something to be proud of and shout from the rooftops as success.

how the hell is it going to lose money??
if we get 50k,which is looking likely, and they paid an average of £15..... thats £750k......if the stadium costs more that £200-300k to hire out i'd be shocked

It is if it is part of a calculated plan and business model.
Get large crowds in helps not just in terms of building for future events but also sponsorship and media attention which will bring in more revenue.
I am at a complete loss to understand the mentality of people who think that having 40 odd thousand people watching rugby league in the nation's capital is a bad thing.
As for the "southern RL bashing" types - who are they? Most normal people I know (from the South) that are coming to the game are just looking forward to watching some top class sport.
What they'll remember is England winning / running them close / getting humped. They won't go back saying wow England won - brilliant game but do you know the crowd was only 40,000 and I believe not all of them paid face value.

IF IF IF.
40k, 45k max.
Do you think they only pay for stadium hire, what about all the marketing and advertisement costs (some would say what marketing), how much do you think they have invested to get the crowd figure to 40k so that they dont lose cash on the event.
