London weighting was mainly for public sector workers, civil servants/NHS techers etc. It also applied to the home counties areas situated outside of the M25. Salaries in London are much higher than anywhere else and even this is often not enough with more poverty in London than anywhere else.
That some people can't get their heads around the fact that a professional sportspersons salary might be 20+% greater than his equivalent counterpart in an area relatively far cheaper to live in is quite bemusing!
