Make sure you don`t miss the match by finding yourself `kettled` ...

And how are you supposed to avoid Piccadilly - it`s where the main rail station is situated.'"

Take the train to Manchester Oxford Road - you can change if necessary at Piccadilly and all train tickets to Manchester are valid to both stations. Oxford Road is also closer to St. Peter's Square if you are intending to catch a tram, and you don't have to pass through the city centre. It is worth checking whether there will be special trains direct to the football ground - if so, they leave from Piccadilly and Oxford Road, so you don't have to leave the station at all if you don't want to.

The trams are off aren't they? Or some were the other week, all the tracks were cut off and whatnot, dunno why. Almost all trains go to piccadily and oxford road and there's one every minute to the other one.

between Victoria and St Peters Square the trams are not running. You can still get on at St Peters Square, GMEX etc... to get to Old Trafford - it will be pretty chaotic though round there.

According to EDL website - they will be gathering at 12 in Wetherspoons in Piccadilly (edge of the Gardens) for a demonstration in Piccadilly Gardens at 5 (hmm, can't see how 5 hours of drinking could lead to problems!). Apparently UAF's counter demo is in the same place at 1.

So, avoid Piccadilly gardens.

It may not be too bad. While the centre lines have been shut, they've been operating a fairly orderly queueing system at Victoria and St Peter's Square to avoid pile ups on the platforms.

Jus thought I'd share my limited knowledge with you

I have an accounting exam in a building about 2 minutes walk from oxford road station, we have been told that the demonstrations start at 10am and are anticipated to go on all day. We have been told that there will be a heavy police presence (as expected) but that there will be heavy security checks entering the building. (this was a little concerning as there are normally none, leads me to believe that these people can be quite nasty) We have also been told that we should take a packed lunch as they are not advising to spend any time in the city unless necessary.

Seems the best thing to do is go as directly as possible to Old Trafford and find a watering hole around there instead

Bit hard when the place you're staying is virtually on top of it.

Quote: vikings 4 ever "I'm sure it said on the news the other week that what the EDL were doing were "static demonstrations" which are legal, in fact they said it was impossible to stop - freedom of speech and all that.

Purely from a devil's advocate position - if one group demonstrates and then another group turns up deliberately to fight them - how is the 1st group worse than the 2nd? However horrible or offensive you may find people like the BNP or the EDL, IMO the best thing is to ingore them. Surely what they want is young muslims fighting in the street. If the EDL held 10 demonstrations and not 1 fight or protest happened and it didn't make any news headlines, they'd probably stop doing them. Obviously they hold the demos to make the headlines and draw attention to themselves - why play into their hands.'"

Because they are all as thick as each other , most kids learn at an early age that if you ignore somebody they tend to go away , unless of course the people you are trying to upset actually want the confrontation , then it just costs us the tax payer a fortune icon_rolleyes.gif
