| Apart from Wire I cant see it, Cas were ultimately a long way off being a champion side this year and so have Hudds been in recent years, competing in the regular season, even beating the big boys, diesnt mean you have a team capable of doing it in finals football. Maybe Catalans, but they're so enigmatic that I cant really see them doing it any time soon.

| Quote: Dita's Slot Meter "Have to agree - Was made up for my Saints-supporting friends, as they have suffered more than most over recent years, but, in truth, no team will have a easier route to picking up the Super League title.
Firstly, a Cas side which had shot its bolt in the middle of August, a Catalans side which was absolutely knackered from their previous exertions, and then when they finally have to meet a side which was match ready and in form, they have the massive fortune of Wigan playing a man short for the majority of the game.
Yes, their name is on the trophy and you can't ever take that from them, but they will fail to win Super League titles with much better sides than the one which beat Wigan.'"
Isn't that precisely the reward for being the most consistent team throughout the weekly rounds? Not lucky, just finding a way to win (albeit against the odds)
In the new system it'd of been Castleford than Wigan, which is probably easier that Castleford, Catalans and then Wigan

Saints deserved it and I have no problem with it. I was simply pointing out, as the previous poster alluded to, that the cards fell heavily in Saints' favour during the play-offs and finishing top had little to do with it.
Leading into the play-offs, even Saints' fans were pretty down on their own chances and I think even now, most of them will still be wondering how on earth a side so short of its vital elements managed to come out on top... I think most will agree that it took a bit of self-implosion on the part of other sides that contributed?

If Todd Carney keeps himself out of mischief I would throw Catalans in there too.

| Wire would be my shout for the next name on the trophy. As realistically it would take about five years of building, Cas for example of last season need o be firstly getting to the upper echelons of the league table , then getting to the semi finals, then getting to the GF (first one probably losing if not more) than finally winning. Whether the new format allows this sort of building we will have to ait and see.

Funny, I've been supporting Wire for forty years and I've never met one of the these 'over confident loud-mouth fans'. Can we be reasonably confident of winning most games we play these days? Hardly outrageous to believe so. I can count on the fingers of one hand just how many times a Wire fan has posted about the 'year of the wolf'. In fact, it is opposition fans who keep coming up with it, not Wire. A bit like the 'barking' that still comes along with Joel Monaghan tries. Anyway, like Dita, much as I'd love a GF win, it would be churlish in the extreme as a Wire fan not to be content with things as they are now.

May I suggest you change your Location from "Knowing it all" to something more appropriate

Bravo, jolly well done...better now?
BTW the thread is called "when will we get a new name on the SL trophy" and there's not much mischief from Wire fans as far as I can make out.
I would have thought that Warrington are best placed to be the next new name, but, I thought that our best chance was over the last two/three years. We should have a chance all things being equal, but, the longer the wait the more the odds will favour other contenders.

seriously???? Anyone in the NRL can win their comp just look at the list of different winners, 4 teams out of 12 in SL is rubbish and is what's holding the game back imo.

If I were a betting man I'd wager a whole pound that Gold Coast, Penrith, Cronulla, Canberra, Parramatta, North Queensland, Newcastle & New Zealand won't win the NRL in the next 5 years. Maybe even 10.
The NRL is better but it's certainly not at the level where anyone can win it. The difference with the NRL is that most teams seem able to have a bad year or 2 and then turn it around and be a contender. In SL teams struggle to poke their nose into the position of being a contender.
Though, until Crowe's takeover, Souths didn't stand a chance.
Possibly due to smaller squads but in the end, in my opinion, it's the fact most of the "lower" SL clubs are run on shoestring budgets.
Also, the Premier League has had only 4 different winners in the same time frame, out of 20 clubs. Union isn't great either with only 7 different winners.
To be honest I think there's far more chance these days for a "5th" winner than there ever has been in SL. Don't forget it took 8 years for Leeds to become the 4th. I think it's just a matter of time, only a few years, before Warrington and Huddersfield win.

Hmmm....I'd fancy at least one of those teams to feature in a GF in the next 5 years.....NZ Warriors 2015 will be the surprise package IMHO. 11 winners since 1998 BTW.....69% of the teams have won it.
Quote: Him "Union isn't great either with only 7 different winners.'" Bad comparison.....
.....from a division of 12 clubs, close to 60% of them winning the trophy over the last 18 years ain't too shabby.
60% from the 14 SL sides would have delivered more than 8 winners. Also, Newcastle to London (280 miles) kind of blows the M4 corridor/Midlands Heartland rubbish out of the water.....St Helens, Wigan, Leeds and Bradford (60 miles) are all pretty much on each others doorsteps by comparison.
Warrington are next up. They have London/Harlequins RL to thank for it too......we spanked them rotten at the Stoop in March 2009 and it was after that game that they turned the corner.......all thanks to London

| Every game matters next season. No stupid playoffs. More intense games. You reach the top four and your one game away from the final. You can't afford a bad run of games IMO.
Saints, Wigan, Wire, Leeds and maybe even Hudds, Catalan could easily get top 4 and have a big chance to get there name on the trophy or at least get more appearances in finals.

Can't tell if you're fishing or are just deluded.
2009 onwards has been our most successful time for quite a while, so much so that Sky keep tipping us to win the GF. (Note how I said Sky, not Wire fans)
