I remember having to play around 6 games in three weeks, mostly away because of fixture pile up from cup runs, we won them all to be crowned champions. It will never happen again because of the way the fixtures are planned out.

| Saints 2006.
I can't believe someone has said they were one season wonders! 6 GFs in a row (and counting!), 4 LLS in a row and 3 Challenge Cups in a row along with a WCC to boot, but they're one season wonders! Yeah, OK! Wish my team were "one season wonders" like them (rather than the one season wonders we actually were!).

Wigan had to pile up the fixtures at the back end of the season to win the league AND cup in 1991.
23rd March Cup semi-final v Oldham
26th March Warrington away
29th March Fev away
1st April Oldham away
4th April St Helens away
7th April Castleford at home
9th April Widnes home (29,000 at central park)
11th April Bradford at home (20,000 at central park)
13th April Leeds away
Then despite losing to Fev in the play-off, they won the cup final against St Helens at Wembley
A crazy run of games that will never happen again. A total of 8 fixtures had been postponed throughout the season.
And players ad coaches moan thesedays about playing games close together at Easter!

Im not sure anyone was trying to say that St's only functioned for that one season, more drawing attention to the fact that St's 05 and St's 07 were a pretty similar side to St's 06 but not anywhere near as successful.
It is hard to argue St's 06 as the greatest club side of all time when in 05 Bradford were champions and in 07 Leeds were champions.
In fact its difficult to argue St's 06 were the greatest club side of that time when Leeds made 4 of 5 grand finals, winning 3 in the two years either side of that year compared to St's total of 3 GF's winning 1.
Im not doing St's down, as a Leeds fan im thankful for them, without them being such a good club in that time it would have taken away from Leeds achievement somewhat. Two great clubs whose success was fantastic.
As a Leeds fan i think our achievements of the past 7 years has been amazing. Champions 5 times in 7 years in a fully pro environment is and a salary capped league is an amazing side, in 2004 we were outstanding at times.

That's what I'd have said. But then any team containing Neil Fox would be contenders. Best footballer I've seen.

There was no conscription in WWI until after 1915. It was a a volunteer army. Does anyone have any info as to whether clubs lost players this early? In WWII Dewsbury won everything because Eddie Waring had players from clubs all over the League playing for them.

| Im biased but for me the Wigan side funnily enough just before it all collapsed in 1995. Don't think there has ever been a greater backline assembled than the wigan backline of that season (and i'd include even the great australian sides in that). For me i'd challenge anyone to show me a better backline ever than 1. Paul 2.Robinson 3. Tuigamala 4. Connolly 5. Offiah 6. Botica 7. Edwards - especially when you think you had radlinski to add to the mix!
Add forwards of Skerrett, Hall, O'Connor, Cowie, Cassidy, Betts, Clarke, Farrell etc. I cant see there has ever been better.

| Either the wigan side of 89-94 or Saints 05-08. Both completely dominated the game for a sustained period. I wish they could have played each other!

I agree with all this but Leeds have still not 'dominated'. There are times over those 7 years where other teams have been far better. Leeds have just proved to have the ability when it comes to the big games. I think winning 3 GF's despite not finishing top proves this. I think the core of your team since the early 2000's has pulled you through GF's that over the course of the season you did not look like winning. Despite being an amazing side, that is not domination.
2004 was Leeds best year, they backed it up with a WCC win in 2005.

| Yes, but given they had all the money in the world to buy ANY player they wanted its not such a great acheivement, ask Man city and Chelsea.

In 05, Saints were decimated by injuries to key men at the back end of the season. In 2007, they only lost one key game (albeit they got battered in the end). The side they had in 2006 sweeped everything before them, and not just in the game. How many sides can lay claim to that?

| You are also excluding all the narrow wins they had that year. I wasn't trying to do down Sts' efforts, just that there seems to be a perception of how 'dominant' they were and yet they only won the title once during the 'Lyon' era. I wouldn't argue Leeds were dominant, but if you are going to add Sts 2005 and 2007, I'd argue Warrington last year should be added to the mix.
As for someone stating that the Wigan backline 95 was the best ever, you're having a laugh surely? Look at the Qld Origin team last year for starters - Lockyer, Inglis, Thurston and Slater are literally light years better than their counterparts in that Wigan side.

This. But also as i understand Rugby League players were discouraged from signing up as were many other sportsmen as the war was supposed to be over by Christmas so thay wanted to keep morale up.
