It isn't? Why not?
Lets remove the possibility of it altogether. After all, what's the downside?

| Quote: "Under the new interpretation, if the ball is not in possession of a player and it makes contact with the corner post (eg from a kick) the ball will be deemed to be touch-in-goal as per the existing rule.'"
So the new rule only applies when a player in possession of the ball touches the corner post. Every other pre existing rule still applies?
What utter bollox and typical Australian logic.
If no one is in possession of the ball and it hits the post it is still a 20m optional restart, but a player in possession of the ball can freely walk all over the post. This surely makes the game more complicated to an outsider and completely contradicts every other rule.

The downside is the additional complexity. Not just in this new exception but also in judging where a player first entered touch. That will cause plenty of actual problems, all to try and prevent a purely hypothetical one.

What complexity? How complex is "A player making contact with the corner flag does not mean that player is in touch"
No problem in judging where he entered touch, that will be where he.....entered touch.

If a player isn't in touch when he hits the flag the chances of him going in touch and in touch in goal at around the same time greatly increase.

Typical northern luddite thinking, "we've managed ok with them for the last 100 years", "shouldn't you wait for a new season to change the rules"... Next up, decisive NRL action the plague of slight variation in post protector thickness that is spoiling our sport.'"
jon you always manage to get a rise out of me, but not this time.
nice try though

im still impressed with your original post in that a try scorer should just reach up on the upright.

| From a spectators point of view I enjoy watching the wingman trying to dodge the flag, however I can see the potential for some "superman" style dives over the line. Are the aussies issuing capes??

| Don't agree with this rule personally, but what irks me more is the NRL again having different rules to the rest of rugby-league. Is there a danger of the NRL incrementally becoming virtually a different sport? Agree the rules should be applied universally to the whole sport.

| Should be interesting when we get to the 4-Nations. As far as I'm aware the International Rules have not been changed so, unless they do, we may see spu-kcuf by the officials from the various nations
