| Quote: vastman "Makinson is a decent player but as good as Johnstone? Never was never will be.
Have to say Jean your attempt to denigrate a good young player Witt fake news is low even for you.
So where are the stats that say Johnstone can't defend? Proof please.
I've watched him play four games since returning from a dreadfull injury.
He's scored 7 tries, was at fault for one try and missed one heavily contested high ball. If Makinson or any other winger has better stats than that both in attack and defence please name him.
Personally I don't think Toms quite ready yet and I'm happy with both Hall and McGillvery for now.
However any sane person can see Johnstone is an international in the making and a genuine star performer.
Instead of being a jelouse low life why not embrace a great young player for what he is and give him the chances he's clearly earning instead of spreading malicious lies you rotten little piece of pond life.'"
Makinson is better than Johnstone and it may be unpopular but Johnstone is overrated. Good going forward but defensively he is poor, you only need to watch the game against Salford and in particular Salford’s last try, way too far inside. As for tries scored, majority of that is down to how the team plays as well as the quality of centre inside of the winger. Would Eden have scored the amount of tries last season if he was playing for Widnes? Makinson, Davies, McGillvary and Hall are all better than Johnstone and you could argue the case for a few others as well.

| I’d love to think Dominic Manfredi could get himself back and playing at the levels he was reaching in 2015 and 2016. If he could then he’d push Hall all the way.
A crying shame that he’s missed nearly 20 months of rugby now.

No he's not, stop bull crapping.
As for his defense it's generally excellent but according to you one error in 240 minutes of RL and he can't defend yet you seriously suggest Makinson, Davies, McGillvary and Hall don't makea similar number of errors.
Whislt any winger would have got that try against Catalan would they, yeah right.
Grow up Jean, this is your worst incarnation yet and if by some miracle this isn't you and there are two people that daft then it's still time to grow up.

Seriously he wasn't as good as that and no he wouldn't have pushed Hall. A one season wonder I'm afraid. Sorry but I doubt he'll play again, 20 month is to long to be away from the game.

| knocker - its laughable if you think a short winger like Robinson wouldn't be smashed to bits in the modern game. He'd no doubt go OK ball in hand (although I don't remember him doing a great deal against Australia before he went to RU and he wouldn't be up against staggered defences like there were often when he played), but defensively he'd be targeted all day. He would not 'compete for the ball' against the best modern wingers on the end of an accurate kicking game. He was never that good in the air and he played in an era when kicking was nowhere near as accurate as today, when international wingers are all very big, agile men.
I personally think its sad that smaller wingers struggle nowadays. Some of the most exciting players I've ever seen were of that ilk, including Robinson and before him Des Drummond, but the game has changed enormously.
I don't know why people get so touchy about former players.

A one season wonder over two seasons Plus he’d been in and out of the side before that (as we had other top class options) and done very well.
He was brilliant in 2015 and 2016. I sense there’s little point giving any credit to any winger that isn’t Tom Johnstone or else you seem to see it as a slight on him and find some bizarre reason to shoot it down. I have those issues discussing football with my 11 year old nephew.

You are still using Robinson as your comparator and ignoring the traits i said would work which he never had.
I said Robinson wasn't a good defensive winger, that doesn't mean others cant be, who is being touchy, i certainly aren't, just pointing out your statement is not as absolute as you make out.

Right back at you Nicky. In the last four years according to you every player who stands on the Wigan wing for more than five minutes is a future international, it's frickin boring.
I'm biased to Johnstone of course I am but for me he's the first winger Trinity have had in forty years who I reckon MAY be good enough to play international - he's probably the first player since Ellis. According to your myopic view if there on the wing at Wigan they are all future internationals and unfortunately you're not alone which explains why the England team isn't picked on form and why we never win. At least I'm discerning, not every Wigan player is a star and all clubs have one or two players who are better than what Wigan have. Even an 11 year old can see thaticon_rolleyes.gif

Did he mention that Marshall was good enough? No, didn't think so.
So he hasn't mentioned every Wigan Winger of the last 4 years.
As for not being alone in a Myopic view I fail to see how different England coaches either picking or not picking Wigan players or certain other players has anything to do with us Winning or losing international tournaments.
The truth is "We haven't been good enough" & I'm pretty sure that no matter which players we'd picked it wouldn't have made much difference.

And I'm afraid this reply is very poor
Firstly he was that good - He was a shoe in for the 2016 Tri Nations
Secondly the OP had already said " I’d love to think Dominic Manfredi could get himself back and playing at the levels he was reaching in 2015 and 2016. If he could then he’d push Hall all the way."
He never said he would get back to that level, he never said he was better than Hall
But in your over eager attempt to promote Tom Johnstone you've not actually understood the context of the post and then gone on the attack.
If I were picking 4 wingers now it would be Hall, McGilvarry , Johnstone & T Davies - Fast forward 2/3 years and I would bet the first 2 won't be getting any better whilst the younger 2 Should - Wasn't that the whole purpose of the thread?

My view?
I only made a case for one and there’s only one who’s been good enough over the past few years to state a case to replace our current wingers in the International set up.
I really like Johnstone by the way. He’s a terrific talent and he more then likely will play for England. Get excited over him all you want (nit too excited though) but because other people make cases for other players, that doesn’t mean they’re bagging the lad.

You mean apart from this.
Clearly he’s on the wind up (about Johnstone) whereas myself and others who’ve mentioned potential wing options haven’t been.
Tom Johnstone looks very good and it’s so pleasing to see him come back from a very serious injury the way he is doing currently. He may well play for England one but he has some decent competition going forward. The two lads who have the shirts will take some shifting but he looks in pole position to do so.
Had Dom Manfredi not got injured in 2016 I suspect Johnstone (and probably McGillvary) would be trying to shift him out of a shirt. It’s all irrelevant now though sadly as the lad has been massively unlucky.
