Quote: Mr. Zucchini Head "People do get a little overexcited about him diving in at the corner though. It's smart finishing, because if you get your feet off the floor it makes it really hard for the defender to do anything. But the skill involved isn't as great as some would have you believe.'"
Check out his try against Widnes here (about 3:30 in) and see if you think there's any skill involved in the finish . . . .

It's a great finish. Skill? There's an element. But there's a much larger element of strength and balance. I just don't find it that skillful. I've scores tries like that myself, admittedly not against anything like the quality he is playing, but the principle is the same. Pick your spot, get your feet in the air and reach for the line. It requires much more in the way of of determination than skill.
I'm not putting the kid down at all, I just object to people saying how amazing it is, they look a lot more than they really are. I could probably find an example of all the good Superleague wingers scoring try's like that.

There are a dozen tries scored in the NRL every week similar or more athletic than that and they are acknowledged without getting worked up about.
This is awareness, ability and skill.

Also search for 'best NRL tries and put downs' on YouTube. A good skill it certainly is but not unique. I do think he is sitting in 3rd place for an England wing spot at the moment behind Hall and Briscoe. Young Burgess at Wigan will be pushing for a spot soon as Will Charnley and Lineham once they regain form and fitness.

| Andy Mason RU convert in the 80's for Leeds then Wakey used to specialise in the spectacular dive into the corner. It's nothing new, and most of the time it's pure effect, with makinson

| The changes to the rules regarding the corner flag has made spectacular finishes in the corner a lot more common. It's funny because had the rules changed a couple of years earlier Saints would probably have won the 2009 GF. It's great to watch but it's not as difficult as some make it out to be. Damian Blanch scored better try than anything I've seen from Makinson a few years ago.

I wouldn't say Makinson has been piling on the timber like there was no tomorrow.

| In terms of skills
Makinson has a nice little kick that he puts in too. Won't be on his try scoring clips, but shows an awareness of how to progress the team forwards when he has run out of space.
Not just a hoof and hope a nice little deft touch with the inside of the boot.

Nonsense. If he didn't need to do it then he wouldn't. See his two tries on Good Friday for example.

Did you conveniently forget he played for Bramley before joining Leeds then Wakey?

I'd argue that he actually made that more difficult than it needed to be. By launching himself in the air he actually made himself more vulnerable to being pushed out of play and out of reach of scoring. He's produced some very skilful finishes, but I don't think that was one of them, at least not as far as the dive goes; the real skill was his slight of foot that gave him the outside.

If he didn't jump in the air he wouldn't have scored. Your bias is boring.

Bias? More like your paranoia pal. I've no problem praising Makinson* or any other player and do so whenever it's warranted, I just happen to disagree with you on that try.
* Quote: The Yellow Giraffe "(Another) great Makinson try. He's making a habit of it. Great ingenuity and teamwork for that one. #TetleysChalCup'"
