NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg |

The extra fixtures do little to enhance SL as it stands, so better to create an "event" that can be attended by sports fans from across the country....Run the RFL 9's over a weekend where there's no soccer on, price the tickets at a decent level and market the friggin' nuts off it.
I know plenty of people over here who are attending the Auckland 9's who have never been to a Warriors game, or even a League game. They are going because the weekend is going to be an event and it's far cheaper than attending the Wellington 7's (which incidentally, haven't sold out this year).
The promoters of the Auckland 9's swapped the 2 days coverage for wall to wall advertising with SKY TV this year, they have got Auckland City Council to chip in with funding for 2 years, naming rights sponsors as well as agreements with the NRL and NRL clubs that at least 2 marquee players from each club will be there...they got the pricing spot on at $69 for 2 days (about 32 quid) and it's looking like they'll fill the place, delivering $3,000,000 in ticket revenue alone.'"

You may be right given how e the game is at growing itself and having a commitment to international RL however there does seem to be some efforts underway. Just read that all 88,000 tickets for Auckland nines have been sold and they are putting in extra temp, seating. The appetite for nines is clearly there.
The PNGRFL has today announced they have confirmed participation of a PNG Kumuls U19 team in this year’s Commonwealth Games Festival in Glasgow.
PNG’s participation will be funded through the Team Kumul program in preparation for the South Pacific games in 2015. Other teams who have confirmed participation include Jamaica, South Africa, Australia, Scotland, England, Canada and Wales.
The tournament, to be played on the 27th & 28th of June 2014 is part of the festival leading into the games to showcase the sport for inclusion into the next Commonwealth Games as a full medal event.

Rugby League's success as a growing international sport has been recognised by the Commonwealth Games Federation at their meeting in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.
The Federation today gave its unanimous support to an application for Rugby League to become a Category Three sport, an important step which will enable the sport to continue to expand and develop across the globe.
The application was presented to the Sports Review Committee of the Commonwealth Games Federation by a delegation from the Rugby League International Federation led by David Gent, Chairman of the RLIF's Commonwealth Commission.
"This is an exciting day for Rugby League and I would like to place on record my thanks to the Commonwealth Games Federation for their support of our application," said Gent.
"Rugby League has a long tradition of being played in Commonwealth countries and so this recognition by the CGF will ensure that the game continues to prosper in regions such as Europe and Oceania.
"Recognition by the Commonwealth Games Federation will also enable Commonwealth countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Caribbean to develop the game and help the RLIF strengthen competition at a Commonwealth and world level."
Category Three recognition is an important first step towards presence at a future Games and will allow Rugby League to work with the regional Commonwealth Games associations on development projects.
Commonwealth Games Federation vice-president HRH Tunku Imran said: "Category Three sports are those that we recognise as working towards future inclusion and we are very pleased to see the high level of commitment by the Rugby League International Federation to further develop the sport across the Commonwealth.

| Quote: Judder Man "I can't see the point of the Magic Weekend anymore it no longer does what it was intended for in expanding the game.
It looks as though Catalans and Leeds will near enough get a bye if Bradford and London financial problems transfer to the pitch.
On a positive note it does raise the London Average gate for the season.
Would sooner have it as an exciting 9's tournament, but would take a few seasons to get up and running as a worthwhile event.'"
Leeds play Wigan not Bradford. Huddersfield are playing Bradford.

Quote: JB Down Under "There is no chance of rugby league being included in the Commonwealth for 2018 as the sports have already been selected.
There are 10 'core sports' that every games must include
The RLIF have made steps in the right direction, but it will take a long time to convince the Commonwealth selectors that there is room for 2 sports that in their shortened form are not to dissimilar.
Cracking news that the Auckland 9's is sold out......let's hope the sun shines, the beer flows and the fans behave themselves, so we can get it on again in 2015!

I agree. I went to the 9s finals at Headingley a while ago and it was good entertaining stuff. However, it was a Tuesday? evening, the teams were mainly reserves and youngsters, the crowd was sp,.....
Just think how good it could be[size IF[/size it was done properly.
I'm sure someone would pay for TV coverage and it can't be difficult to find a sponsor for a full day (or 2?) of family entertainment, can it?
This is something things like snooker, darts, golf and tennis have over proper sport. They can fill a whole day's TV schedule for a sports channel, thus making economies of scale on the event.

You said i"in our lifetimes", no one is saying it won't take a few years and a concerted effort. Liver damage permitting I've got about 40 years left on this planet, hopefully, so very achievable "in my lifetime".

Make the prize big enough and SL clubs will send their stars. A 2 day festival somewhere fans would like to spend the weekend with a fun feeling would be well supported IMO and most importantly do away with the current MM situation that creates an inequitable fixture format.

Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity
Just to avoid confusion Starbug is the username of Steven Pike
SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!:9005.jpg |

| Just how popular would a 9 s tournament be? , how long did the last one last?
It would end up as a reserve competition, there is no way the SL coaches would risk their best players now we have relegation back on the agenda

| No it wouldn't if it followed the NRL nines route. The last one was a mid week tournament for reserve players so you can't judge a mm event by that stick.
Make the prize money 250,000 pounds and a rule that clubs have to field a min number of first team players and the credibility issue is solved.
Then you have to create the event and marketing to convince 30,000 RL fans each day to attend. It's not hard with some decent organisation!
50,000 pounds for each of the twelve SL clubs taking part plus 250,000 for winner.
30,000 tickets each day would cover that

| 40,000 at Manchester/Birmingham/Wembley over 2 days.
£20 for a day ticket.
So there is £1.6 Million in ticket sales alone.
How much to rent a stadia will be the guiding principle on cost of the ticket.
But if it's less than a Million for 2 days, then you have £300,000 for Prize money and £300,000 for marketing.
Anything else like sponsorship, merchandise, etc is pure profit.
I agree the last 9's tournement was too much like a side bar. Played mid-week, with no name players and no marketing.
If it's after the Union season is finished you could invite them, you could probably put in a few international teams as well as SL teams. The Forces may also play, make it appealing to more than the current fans.
