Which is what a lot of Salford fans had been saying for years whist watching the club pursue a "build it and they will come" business plan. The club would point out the visibility of the stadium from the motorway, the fans would point out how Walsall FC are hardly giants in their game from a similar prominent position, and the reply would be "well, that's different".

| the new stadium was needed but was forced upon by the RFL and not owning the stadium we had only attendance and corporate as are only income, wheres the willows we had a far more healthy income. with the added investment in players in the final season which was a complete failure with plenty of them on very good money.
this whole franchise is killing are game with rules that you need to be in a nice stadium forcing clubs like wakey, cas, hull kr, to improve or move stadiums, saints own there stadium and appear to have done a decent job in there first year

I don't think franchising is killing the game at all. I think the initial franchise rules were wrong and it should have been about building a solid business foundation and youth development rather than making sure your stadium looks nice on TV.
Personally I think franchising is the way forward and we need to give it a lot more time. As I have previously said on other threads, its all or nothing.
If we were to go with franchising then it should be a closed shop unless certain rules are broken or a team pulls out. There should be none of this re-apply every 3 years nonsense. All clubs below SL either stay as they are or become feeder clubs for SL teams like they do in Australia.
If we don't want a closed shop then we need to bring back P&R and get rid of the criteria for being an SL team. I believe that if we choose the P&R route then the game will completely fall apart and most teams will go back to being semi-pro within the next 10-15 years.

| That's probably true
Salford didnt need a new ground because of Franchising. They needed a new ground because the Willows was a hovel.

I wouldn't want Hull KR to be a feeder club and would hope they would be in SL. However if they weren't I would accept them as just been self sufficient independent team in the next tier of RL.

| John Wilkinson's latest statement talks of a robust budget for 2013. Rubber stamped by KPMG!
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
. . -the same cretins that rubber stamped Bradfords!!
Wilko goes on to say that it is a unique opportunity to invest in a top-level sports club.
Jesus Christ. What planet is he on???
Sorry - can't put the link up. It's from Salford's official site.

Is this the same HKR who drew less than 1500 under a decade ago?
P&R only impacts on Salford, Cas, Widnes, Wakey, HKR, Fax, Fev and Leigh at present. They would be the clubs likely to go down and up, add Toulouse, Sheffield and one other ideally Swansea/Cardiff and you have two tens in a FT structure to grow from.
We never had P&R as of old we had P&R with caveats, caveats that saved Hudds for many years when Hunslet, Dewsbury were winning the 2nd tier
The suicide run is going from FT to PT with no hope of getting back for 3 years, two FT divisions with P&R and 3 year applications to the second division reduces the risk and provides expansion opportunities - the caveats must be min spend and facilities.

| Quote: Wheels "The problem lies in your first paragraph. If the Willows was earning you so much money, why wasn't any of it invested back into the ground rather than questionable rugby players?'"
Not quite true. Due to Salford Council's rather keen safety bods, a lot more was spent on the Willows in the last 25 years than most "traditional" RL grounds in the last 100. Two new main stand wings, large section of terrace replaced in the NE corner, new crush barriers in the North Stand and Shed, new seating in the North Stand, complete reclads and re-roofing of the North Stand and Shed, community classroom. Yes, the bogs and changing rooms remained rubbish, but much more work was done on the Willows over that period than at most grounds (many of which were in greater need).
