I thought it was about the abilities of two players.
To be honest if you want to include a third player I never rated Andy Gregory he was a throw back to an era long gone in his playing days, certainly at Test level. His style and build/physique
was from the 60's

| Schofield for me had everything you want from a too class international player.skillful and exciting and could turn a game in a flash, when he finished his career at the galpharm he had lost his pace but his skills, brain and trickery were still there.
Edwards on the other hand although a very good player himself was a grafter in a very good side who often steamrollered opposition, but schoey was the far better player for me.

| Quote: Steve Fox "Seriously, Tony Myler was a much more talented player than Schofield and it's only his injury record that stopped him becoming an all-time great.'"
Tony was probably a fine player but he did not stand out at Test level against Australia.
In 14 Test matches he scored one try. The players in the same position for Oz, Kenny and Lewis were tearing it up.
With Balmain in 12 starts he scored one try.
Balmain played him off the bench in 1986 in their two Finals games preferring the "Gary Bridge" at Stand off.
Would of, could of, should of, its a British thing it seems.
Myler and Holding 0 from 2
Myler and Fox 0 from 2
Myler and Gregory 0 from 1

It's obvious Schofield had more ability that Edwards. Only Hanley was above him in that era.
You're misremembering or underrating Gregory because of what he looked like. He was superb at test level and still would be in today's game because the speed, range and timing of his distribution was ridiculously good.

I thought he was ok and a stop gap to be honest.
Players in his position should control a game and make things happen, he was not that quick beyond 5 yards and nowhere near as good as the players against him at Test level.
He played against
Peter Sterling
Alan Langer
Ricky Stuart
Legends of the game in key positions.
All good we each have our opinions on everything.

| There's no contest. Schofield was good but really not fit to lace Edwards' boots.
In any case, the outcome of this is quite obvious. St Helens and Leeds fans will think Schofield was the best. Everyone else will say Edwards.

I'm a proud Wigan lad (well 41 year old lad!!) with a picture of Central Park on my office wall but I think the answer to this question is Schofield by a considerable distance

| Edwards was a team player whereas Schofield would often only play for himself or his clique. I believe Leeds were held back by his lack of professionalism whereas Edwards was ultra professional. Going on their skills I'd say Schofield at his best was a better player than Edwards at his best but if I was building a team I wouldn't have Schofield near it.

I would agree with you on that.

| Schofield was the better player - genuinely world class and naturally talented as evidenced by his performances at both international level and in Australia for Balmain and Wests. That's the true acid test of a players greatness. Didn't achieve as much as he should have done domestically due to his own ego, lack of professionalism on occasions and playing for the wrong club at the wrong time.
Edwards wasn't a world class player as evidenced by his performances at international level and in Australia for Balmain. Fantastic team player and leader who made the very best of his lack of natural talent through sheer hard work and professionalism. Made his name domestically in a great, full-time professional team environment but the vast majority of those games were of a flat-track bullying nature.
Alluding to what others have said, a great team requires several Edwards-type team players among it's ranks but not so many of the individualistic Schofield-types.
The extent of his coaching is ''BASH EM, JUST F*CKING BASH EM. HE'S LOW ON CONFIDENCE, BASH HIM''
He's a limited coach that won't last long term.[/quote:8f22o6ue]
That would make Wigan strong favourites then. With Ratchford at FB and Patton with Cronk in the halves, I think we'll do very well without Sam.[/quote:8f22o6ue]: |

| The irony of this is that the same people who are saying Schofield is better than Edwards are the same type of people who say Tomkins is too greedy and they would rather have a Sinfield type player in their team.
p.s Edwards by a distance, and my father (a saints fan) laughed when he saw this and said no contest, Edwards.
