Quote: Panda92 "Graham whines at the ref too much for me. Not saying that when he actually plays the game he doesn't set an example - he's a great player - but he does whine a bit too much. Irritating.'"

Not unlike peacock then. icon_biggrin.gif At least with the captains armband he has a legitimate reason to talk to the ref.

Only Graham & Roby have been man of steel and graham was the first voted for by the players.

Needs to be GB based for media work.

More I think about it more I think hes the only choice.

only issue with Ellis, does he know all the players well enough? he wont have played much with or against the likes of Eastmond and Tomkins , so wont know their personalities well enough, how to motivate them etc etc etc

Morley prob should get the job as the "old man" of the team, which is basically what you want your captain to be. Graham vice captain.

The obvious choice is Morley.

Quote: Ewwenorfolk "There are better players in his position available. I'm not a big fan of using players out of position - if McNamara's willing to put Sinfield in at 13, then by all means, he could captain the side. I don't think we should be so willing to play players out of position, and if we do we shouldn't be awarding that player captaincy, when he's not even in the squad in his best (or even 2nd best position). At hooker too, he will only be on the pitch for about half the game.'"

He was England's best player in the last tournament, but then again even when half backs win man of the series they are dropped for no-mark hype machines

Pick the team first, then choose the best person for captain. Sinfield for example makes a dood captain for Leeds but is not guaranteed to be in the 17 for England thus would be an odd choice.

The 37 man squad is listed below

Chris Bridge (Warrington), Tom Briscoe (Hull FC), Kyle Eastmond (St Helens), James Graham (St Helens), Ryan Hall (Leeds), Sean O`Loughlin (Wigan), Danny McGuire (Leeds), Adrian Morley (Warrington), Jamie Peacock (Leeds), James Roby (St Helens), Nick Scruton (Bradford), Michael Shenton (Castleford), Kevin Sinfield (Leeds), Sam Tomkins (Wigan), Ben Westwood (Warrington), Shaun Lunt (Huddersfield), Kevin Brown (Huddersfield), Richard Myler (Warrington), Ryan Atkins (Warrington), Jodie Broughton (Salford), Leroy Cudjoe (Huddersfield), Peter Fox (Hull KR), Lee Smith (Leeds), Gareth Carvell (Warrington), Ben Harrison (Warrington), Jamie Langley (Bradford), Tony Clubb (Harlequins RL), Ben Jones-Bishop (Harlequins RL), Andy Lynch (Bradford), Joe Westerman (Castleford), Kirk Yeaman (Hull), Louie McCarthy Scarsbrook (Harlequins), Eorl Crabtree (Huddersfield), Scott Moore (St Helens), Paul Sykes (Bradford), Jon Wilkin (St Helens), Willie Manu (Hull FC).

From that list, I can see three current club captains – Adrian Morley, Kevin Sinfield and Andy Lynch

Lynch is a good player but is by no means certain to be on the plane down under never mind in the 17

The problem I have with Morley being captain is similar to the Peacock era – ideally, your captain should be on the field for 80 minutes... if for nothing more that the motivational aspect

This leaves Sinfield – and a lot of people posting on these pages (who won’t be picking the team of course) are listing Sinfield and 9 with Roby on the bench suggesting Sinfield will not necessarily be an 80 minute player

Ellis would make a fine captain and I would have no problems there – Burgess is a couple of years away and Graham is never captain material. Nobody in the backs jumps out as a candidate

It boils down to this for me – whoever McNamara picks for 13 out of Sinfiled and O’loughlin should be captain

Well, for me there are essentially two types of captains. The first is the organiser – typically a half back or a loose forward – who is the tactical leader on the field and bosses the team around. You still need the organiser whether they are captain or not, however it solves a problem if they can be both – i.e. Lockyer and Thurston

The other type of leader is the ‘from the front’ leader, by actions rather than words – this is certainly the type of leader we have had in Peacock for the last couple of years (in spite of the fact that he is not a club captain)

You are asking of course because I said Graham wasn’t captain material. Well, he would fall into the second category and I agree, by action, he is inspirational – his performances leading the Saints pack forward for the last few years have been immense and he is by far the best prop in the country

But... his personality is such that he looks to allocate blame when the going gets tough (probably because people don’t match his own standards), either the ref or to a lesser extent his team mates. We know that when England play Australia and New Zealand, they will have tough matches and I simply cannot see Graham rallying the team under difficult circumstances

And one more thing. I feel the years of hurt the same as any English rugby league fan and the day we beat the Aussies in a final/series will be one of the happiest of my life. But... it is only a sport at the end of day and I would hope the captain of my country would shake hands with the opposition and say well done rather than storm off in a sulk

This is my opinion of course and Graham still has the time to mature into a captain but I don’t think he is anywhere near yet

ive always believed the captain should be one of the halfbacks[they're the clever ones] so yes i am serious..these boys are the future.
why give the captaincy to someone whos known nothing but failure at international level.?
