I saw him probably 30 or 40 times. He was the only 5/8 we put up against Wally who gave as good as he got. But unlike Wally, Kenny was that good in the NSWRL.
If Brett Kenny had been a Queenslander, Wally Lewis would have been Queensland's lock.

| GO ROOSTERS...........!! nobody likes us we dont care!
bulldogs, eels, tigers, dragons, broncos would probably be the biggest teams in terms of support and have the longest bandwagon
never a dull moment in the nrl and its dam near impossible to call a premier/ playoff contenders at the start of the season

I love Brett.
But........you wish, EA!!!
1986 Kangaroos ring a bell, my friend?
Both players close to their prime and there was no doubt about the 5/8th and the centre in that team.

39110_1363272058.jpg Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go
-
Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know

Nah, like every tour back then (yeah, I'm looking at you Terry Fearnley) the team was picked politcally.
Wally was #1 at rep level, no argument. But if Kenny had been a maroon, I reckon Wally would now be talked about as the greatest lock of all time instead of the greatest 5/8 of all time.
Let's be honest, Wally for the Broncos and Gold Coast was decent but he never got even close to the heights he got to in Origin or Tests.
Kenny was that good no matter which jumper he was wearing.
It's all personal opinion anyway I guess, I'll just never see Wally as better than Bert overall. Reps, yes. Overall, no.

Your Sydney bias in favour of your clubs is starting to show, mate.
Lewis dominated football in Brisbane as well. At a time when the Brisbane competition was still very good.
He won premierships with Valleys and Wynnum - the former when they weren't the strongest team in the competition in my view.
Wynnum-Manly circa 1984 would have beaten any Sydney side around.
They beat a Souths side featuring Belcher, Meninga and Lindner (to name a few) 42-8 in the Brisbane GF of 1984, by playing sparkling champagne football that was unmatched in the country at that time.

Sure, there's a bit of bias, I did see plenty of the great Parra side of the early-mid 80's and I didn't see any Brisbane side play.
Anyone would have struggled to beat Parra or the Dogs from 81-86. Hell, Australia would have struggled to beat them. Maybe its the same for Wynnum.
I can't really comment on the Brissy comp back then, we didn't get it in Sydney. All I can say is based on what I saw of Lewis and Kenny over their careers, Kenny is a gnat's pube in front for mine but I have absolutely no dramas with anyone having The King in front.

I have seen all of the Sydney comp between 1978-1985 (inclusive).
I've got that Brisbane 1984 GF on disc, if you ever want to have a look...
Peter Jackson also played for Souths, in addition to Meninga, Belcher and Lindner. Still got done 8-42.
Re- Lewis circa 1984. He had the best year you could ever have - that was why it was compared to Lockyer's from a few years ago...
Wally Lewis 1984:-
Won Brisbane Grand Final with Wynnum (captain)
Won Panasonic Cup Final with Brisbane (beating Canterbury and Parramatta in early rounds) (captain)
Won Origin 2-1 with Queensland (captain)
Won Ashes with Australia 3-0 (captain)
Club, State and International.
The greatest five-eighth to play our game.

| I always find Poms tend to support whatever club has the nicest looking shirt or whatever one they win on ebay.
A lot support Melbourne Storm because 'Neighbours' is shot down there.
Quite a few seem to support Brisbane Broncos too because the maroon shirts remind them of the colour of their skin after yet another cheap package holiday to the Costa del sol
