Ron Wileman on Roger Millward Challenge Cup Final Hull V Hull KR 1980. Millward played on despite having his jaw broken, players were made of tougher stuff back then.

Paul Moriarty on Hugh Waddell in 1988/9 (I think). Moriart just came flying in from the side with his elbow raised, straight at Hugh's jaw, smashing it to pieces.

Hugh coached our University side. We had played Salford Uni in the afternoon and went across to Leeds for that game. It was a shocking tackle. Hugh turned up for training the following Monday evening all wired up. I can't remember how long his recovery was but it took a while. |

After that 'Legends' game at Headingley a few years back, we got chatting to Hugh in the Supporter's Club afterwards. He was a indeed a sound bloke. More than happy to talk about his time in the game, and sign autographs. Complete teetotallar, BTW, which is a real rarity for someone who played the game when he did. |

Leicester University 87-90.
Hugh was from Burton on Trent I think, hence the RFL assigning him to us. He was a great bloke, taught us no hopers a lot and even came out on the rag week pub crawl and drank orange juice all night through a straw with his jaw still wired up. |
