Quote: JEAN CAPDOUZE "That is a very strong judgment.

However no one can deny that Roger Milward is the greatest No. 6 ever to play for Great Britain.'"

Yes they can, Millwards was a great player but played more of a running style behind ball playing forwards. I think John Holmes was a more rounded player, and just as good. Schofield is better hands down. People shove Schofield out to centre to accommodate him in teams like this, but stand off was his best position.

John Holmes was a great player, but so was Ken Gill, but Roger Millward in my view was about 20% above both.

Quote: Neville Davies "In 50 years I have not seen a better full back than Paul Charlton. Record number of tries in a season from full back, plus I have never seen him lose a one on one defence of the line on a break.'"

Overtaken by Neil Turley in 2001, admittedly Turley wasn't in the top flight though.

Whilst his tries in a season record may have gone, I agree with previous posters about Paul Charlton being the best GB full back of the last 50 years and I was going to mention him in my earlier post but I thought that people would think that I was being greedy as a Salford fan!! Glad to see Ken Gill get a mention but he didn't really re-produce his form at international level.

Quote: JEAN CAPDOUZE "Didn't you ever see Roger Milward? If so, how could he not be a certain selection?'"

I first saw Roger Milward playing when he was in Castleford's youth team. He was a superb player and worthy of serious consideration. However, in my team, I would have a slight tendency for Jonathan Davies or Bobby Fulton at stand off. I know Fulton played for Australia but he was more British than some other players that have been selected. To have to leave out players like Roger Milward illustrates my point though of the impossibility of the task.
Paul Charlton again is a worthy choice and certainly had all the attributes but so did Radlinski and several others.
Boston, particularly in the early part of his career, was peerless but there are numerous other wingers who you would be loathe to leave out.
The only clear selections for me would be Murphy, McTigue and Huddart with a slight favouring for Davies and Fox at centre.

I would struggle to pick a best team from the last fifty years but from the last twenty five-thirty years this would be my pick.

1. Jonathan Davies
2. Des Drummond
3. Gary Schofield
4. Paul Newlove
5. Martin Offiah
6. Ellery Hanley
7. Andy Gregory
8. Kevin Ward
9. Lee Jackson
10. Andy Platt
11. Chris Joynt
12. Andy Farrell
13. Paul Sculthorpe

Suprised no one has mentioned who the Australia and Kiwi teams feared the most in Vince Karalius, I would also have Millward in there at stand off.
The original poster has put Tomkins in at full back, I reckon Radlinski and and Charlton had a better overall game.
Lots of great international backs mentioned, sadly our current international backline the weakest I,ve known for almost a decade now.

Loose forward is probably the most difficult selection of all with Vinty Karalius, Mal Reilly, Rocky Turner, John Whiteley, Paul Sculthorpe and Geoff Gunney springing to mind immediately and with a bit more thought you could think of as many more worthwhile contenders. Vinty is up there with the best though.

Whitely was a better ball handler & had a tad more pace/better feet than Karalius, in todays games JW would be the pick at 13 but I went for VK at 13 and JW at 12 which is were he often played for GB.
I can't see past Jonathan Davies at full back, he could play anywhere in the backline and would have been fantastic at 6 too. As good as Tomkins is, he just isn't even a close match compared to Davies IMO.
As for the inclusion of Offiah in many people's teams, yes he had a lot of pace but he was the worst GB defender in any position in my memory..Sure primarily you want clinical finshers which he was but there were equally great finishers with just as much speed whom were tenatious and better defenders by a very long distance..

The idea of the game is to score more than the opposition. Offiah scored more than he ever conceded by perceived poor defence and by a long, long way. Not only that but his defence was actually pretty good, even though ungainly. Furthermore, because of the threat he posed his centre would get a little more space in pressure situations.

In my opinion, Mal Reilly wasn't in the same class as people like Karalius, Whiteley or Turner. Widnes alone produced 4 better than Reilly in my view in the period under consideration - Karalius, Laughton, Nicholls (although he tended to play second row later on) and Adams. I've already expressed by view on Karalius. Laughton was a better footballer than Reilly. Adams too (plus rock solid in defence). Nicholls, I believe, was GB's most capped forward at one stage.

Quote: Neville Davies "In the past 50 years Roger Millward is the best G.B.player I have seen.'"

I always judged a player by how much I feared him when he was playing my team. Whilst Roger was a star player he was not someone I feared like some players. Only those grounds I wouldn't put him close to being the BEST of the last 50 years - he was in the category of a "good 'un" but not a 5 decade stand out player in my view.
