| Quote: Roy Haggerty "I think you are making my point for me. People who decry the current methods of attempting expansion always suggest that there's another, better, way forward. Yet there isn't a single example of a top flight club being created through any other method than the current, flawed, risky, top-down method. So to say, this way shouldn't be done, the other way is beter, is just guff. There isn't another way. And opponents of expansion should be honest enough to say that - saying that we shouldn't try to expand through the likes fo Celtic and Catalans is essentially saying we shouldn't try to expand, full stop.'"
The expansion of Catalans is a sensible method based on a merger of two existing clubs from an area with a recent history of 4 semi-pro clubs. London were 16 years old with a continuous history of 30 years of the game being played there and even there that was only enough with some extra help. The clubs formed on less basis such as Crusaders, PSG and Gateshead all failed miserably as SL clubs so your method is defective. When Toulouse have a decent Championship side they'll be welcomed into SL and do well, only a small minority will oppose them (likewise most people on here supported Catalans, it was just a vocal minority, or people whose club was affected, against it. It wasn't the universal opposition of sane people to a miserably failed club that Crusaders have and PSG had)

| Quote: Johnoco "LOL expansion-zi? It is because of flat earthers like you that we have a situation where a sport established 114 years ago (careful, don't rush these things) struggles to establish a team anywhere remotely outside its heartlands. It is because of people like you wanting to keep RL within a small radius near your house so you can get the bus to games that it is so ridiculously small when it should, if it was a fair world, be twice as big as soccer.'"
This argument is so outrageously wrong that it shows you're opposed to a common sense attitude to expansion from people who actually want expansion to work. I have every reason to support expansion and hence I am against your reckless ideas

Clever really because the '1873' not only represents the mileage on a round trip from South Wales to watch the club, but also the average attendence for a Celtic Home game last season.'"
Bazza keep the noise down the adults are talking.

Last time I checked, I had no say on who got into SL or who didn't. Is RL not 114 years old then? Why is it so geographically limited then? Because of it's inclusive nature?
But I certainly aren't going to debate the issue with someone who calls people scum.

| Quote: Johnoco "It's not about 'competing' with Union, it's an unavoidable consequence. I take absolutely no notice of Union and even I know how big it is becoming. Cricket and Hockey are 100% different games, unfortunately RU is not. If RU continues to grow as it is, any competition/trophy (Challenge Cup???) will be claimed as 'rugby'. It's exactly like VHS and Betamax. It's little use people saying Betamax was technically superior because look where it ended up. RL could end up as a footnote in sports history, well a bit more than that perhaps but of no huge consequence really.
Imagine a guy had made a programme called the 'Star-Factor' but couldn't get a TV deal. Then Simon Cowell comes along with his X-Factor with a big deal and all the attendant media fuss. Do you think anyone will know or care about the guy who made the first show and actually had the idea? It has happened many times in the past and could easily happen to RL.'"
It's more like PCs and Apple Macs. The Apple Mac might be the technically better computer but is less popular. Yet there is no danger of the Apple dying out because those who kjnow it, love it.

Yeah but if Apple hadn't had their Ipod moment they may be well in the doo-daa. RL needs it's Ipod equivalent to secure the future!

If you don't know the main reason for that, you don't know much about the history of Rugby League.

I know a lot about RL history and I know the excuses but the overriding reason is the lack of welcome for anyone new. At the first sight of problems it has been 'pull up the drawbridge and blame the newcomers'.
And then complain about lack of recognition.

Wow, perhaps you can explain which clubs have had this done to them by the RFL, the only organisation in pro RL that could "pull up the drawbridge".

The overriding reason for the failure of expansion is the lack of money

| The thing is we can all argue hard and long about how this system or that system has failed to expand the game , the point now is given what we currently have , how do we keep it
What should happen with regard the Crusaders now , if the reports in the sun are to be believed then the sport doesn't have the money to finance expansion , so do we have no choice but to take whatever deal is offered , even if that means they move to Wrexham ?

The problem I have with expansion (such as it is) is the cack handed, amateur and stupid, utterly stupid, way in which it is managed.
The costs of such inept management are not solely borne by the imploded expansion club, but also by the viable clubs ommitted to accomodate them, the sport as a whole and future expansion clubs.
If it's going to be done, at least let's have it done right.
