I undertook a 'creating a harassment free environment' training package at work recently and one area they said that should be considered is not asking someone from the LGBT community what they were doing that night, that weekend etc as it may be uncomfortable for them.

That was my point. Nobody who calls someone an imbecile or an idiot actually means the people they aim it at are actually mentally retarded. They're just more socially acceptable words than calling someone a c**t.
