| Quote: JonM "You could make the argument that with 16 applicants and 7 on the shortlist, having only 4 is the conservative/safety first option? Hemel wanted to enter in 2012 and have been told to wait, so it seems like "all at once" is the preferred option.
Presumably the number of clubs and the 14/10 split is budget related; if the RFL is paying for all travel in CC1, makes it cheaper if you have fewer fixtures and fewer new clubs. And cynically, it makes it easier to get the clubs to vote for the change if most of them aren't affected because they're in the new, bigger championship and half of those left behind (Skolars, S.Wales & Gateshead) would welcome opposition closer to themselves in playing standards.
Still smiling at Rupert Bear's description of Oxford, Coventry, Hemel, Chester, Northampton etc. as "the back of beyond".
Teams at this level in France routinely travel 5+ hrs for away games - last weekend had La Reole v Lyon (both 70+ year old traditional clubs) which is 700+ mile round trip and Mille v Corbeil (over 1000 mile round trip). Those are mostly amateur players, BTW.'"
France is much larger than England though isn't it.
Anyway you won't have to worry about it though will you because it won't be you having the expense of all the extra travelling will it?
And yes the above teams are the back of beyond compared to the rest of the league.

Well, yes, I already have to travel much longer distances than you to watch a match. Each weekend, not just for a couple of away games.
Coventry & Northampton are an hour and a half (I guess) from Doncaster. I bet even Bristol & Gillingham will be within a few minutes the same travel time to Doncaster compared with Doncaster-> Workington & Whitehaven (3 and a half hours?)
But really, of all the clubs that might be in this league, Doncaster probably have the least to worry about in terms of travel. The Cumbrian clubs & S. Wales are the ones that really have to put in the miles.

Yes I know and I just can’t see the benefit of this to anyone in Cumbria.

Well if the Cumbrian teams don't like it (despite voting for it), then they know exactly what to do about it, don't they?

How do you know everyone in Cumbria voted for this?

I believe it was a unanimous vote for this move, although I accept I may be wrong on this.

Other than the fact that they will have more teams to play, how could you possibly believe that this would be designed directly for the benefit of anyone in Cumbria? They will benefit if the sport is stronger, just like all other RL clubs. You are aware that the Cumbrian clubs were admitted to the league in the late 1940's via an almost identical process? I wonder if there were people at that time moaning and clamouring that it was unfair in some way.

Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity
Just to avoid confusion Starbug is the username of Steven Pike
SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!:9005.jpg |

I agree, a bit odd. It'd take me as long from Manchester to Gateshead as from Manchester to Oxford, for example (granted, I don't support a CC1 club).
Plus, I'm sure SW Scorpions and the Skolars would welcome (say) Bristol and Hemel respectively. I bet a regular, affordable away trip would be good for Skolars and for Hemel.

The BIG difference is that Cumberland produced many, many top RL players throughout the 1900's through their amateur teams (players who were snapped up by the Lancashire/Yorkshire pro clubs) and it was a natural progression that they would get their own pro teams.

Probably but there were no away fans to speak of in the 1940s anyway so no great loss.
