Has Meli stopped running yet?

| Quote: Ovavoo "It's a fair point and a novel one that's only paid off for McDermott in the past few games. It could be that Leeds wouldn't have been in so much bother early on in the game had Burrows started. Anyhow, he's back to his best and even if he doesn't start I hope he's on the bench.'"
No Burrow is a one trick pony and that is why he shouldn't start. His limitations as a starter have been ruthlessly exposed internationally in the past and would be again. However his one trick is a very good one and coming on and running against tiring defences he can be devastating so he's definitely worth consideration for that role. Credit too to McDermott for recognising this and using him this way.

Well done for complementing a talented and game breaking player (who has just won the Grand Final man of the match vote with 100% nominations) in such a demeaning and patronising way
Quite an achievement

There's a fair point there though.
No-one is denying Burrow was great when he got the ball yesterday. His try and break were fantastic and McD has used him well. The first thing me and my Mrs said when we saw the rain was "Burrow will run riot". He fully deserved the MoM award and was indeed the gamebreaker.
However, if you think the Aussies or Kiwis will fall for a dummy like Meli did or will fail to handle him in defence (ie, let him come to you and take the body, don't overcommit or go high), you're kidding yourself. Nor will they tire easily. Current Aussie and Kiwi internationals are at peak fitness and ability and are a level above anything we saw yesterday.
Rob Burrow is not the answer to international success and as good as he was yesterday, should be nowhere near the side.

I just don’t like people describing Grand Final MOM performers as one trick ponies. He does some things very well but he is also a top class professional RL player (something I suspect the poster isn’t)
As for Burrow for England – he has performed well in the past and is on top form so he would be well worth a shot (I felt it was between him and Robinson but Burrow’s form in the play offs and Grand Final would clinch him a spot for me)
And... as for Meli taking the dummy and not the Kiwis or Aussies, would Meli have taken that dummy when he won his 14 New Zealand caps or has he just become a more gullible player in recent times?

Meli hasn't been Kiwi standard for many years, that's why he's not played for them since 2004.
I'm not denying Burrow is a great player - his step and running are superb and he tackles above his size and weight. But he's just not a top international, however well he played yesterday. His size is likely to be less of a benefit at top international level, which makes it nothing but a limitation.

Someone clearly doesn't remember Rob Burrow tormenting the super-fit Kiwis in a series whitewash, taking home man of the series.

Oh I do. But for me he offered more of an all-round game 4 years ago than I've seen of him this year. Which is why he's being used as an impact runner against tired defences rather than in an organising half-back role.
That may work well against a tired St Helens in the rain, but on a dry track against the Aussies? No.

They have truly enjoyed and profited from running at him though and have hardly been bamboozled by his passing and kicking game. He is not an international class starting half back as his dismal efforts in the world cup showed. However he does have value as a situational substitute.
