He should be given a ticking off by his manager, nothing more.
Frankly, I don't blame him. An incredibly talented player treated like muck by jealous opposition fans.
It's striking how some people can fake outrage ("disgrace") in the hope of a bit of petty witch hunting. See the whole Jonathan Ross saga for previous example.'"
Fans can and do treat players how they want - some with respect, others not.
The more he behaves like a pantomime villain the more he will be treated like one - he just needs to let his talent do the talking.
Flashings the V's at opposing fans, right in front of camera's of national TV (being viewed worldwide) is not the smartest thing he could have done. Just gives the RU loving beeb more chance to show us in a bad light.
Fine and or short ban.

| Quote CM Punk="CM Punk"Where was the uproar when Myler and Mathers did it to the Wigan fans a couple years ago?'"
That doesn't suit the anti Wigan argument. Off course Tomkins should never have done it but the level of hypocrisy on here by many opposition fans is staggering. No matter what happened today you would still be getting thread after thread of bitter fans having a dig at Wigan. We could have won 50-0 and some would still blame the ref, its quite funny how these fans can pick up every little decision that went Wigan's way but cant think of any that went Leeds way. The thing that annoys me most about RL fans is the level of bitterness and single minded attitude by many.
By the way has everyone actually seen it or have they just seen [url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_league/14695413.stmthis[/url and decided to jump on anti Wigan bandwagon.

Edited for accuracy. Wigan deserved to win yesterday - no doubt at all - but if you can't see that what Tomkins did was outrageous, petulant and far beneath acceptable professional conduct then it's you who should open your eyes. As someone else posted, if you go on TV representing your employer and make a V sign to the public in most professions you would be sacked.

I can see that, that kind of action is petulant and not once have I condoned it so not sure how I need to open my eyes.
It was a v sign, why should he be sacked, you wouldn't be saying this the other round you didn't say it when Myler and Mathers did it, which shows your single minded attitude. Its you who needs to open your eyes and accept that this has happened many times and far far worse things have happened.

| "Someone else mentioned that to me," he said. "I really don't know what it is."
It's a rude gesture Tomkins you plonker, you aren't bigger than the game and you will be booed by all next England outing.

| Unless someone takes a boot to Sam Tomkin's backside pdq, he's in great danger of ending up as one of the game's 'might have beens'.

| I have no love of Wigan, but no - not worth a ban.
Anyway how can the RFL accuse anybody of bringing the game into disrepute, with their recent record?

Most are discussing this

And the fact it was discussed in the postmatch commentary.

| In AFL (Aussie Rules) they used to ramp up the level of bans for offences caused during showpiece occasions ....
In other words, a one game ban during the regular season would be a two game ban if you committed the same offence during the say, the grand final.
