An international coach will never please everyone and whilst I feel Widdop has been a bit wasted, McNamara has got the majority of his selections bob on IMO, both on match days and the initial squad. I could argue a case for Crabtree over T Burgess but other then that there's not a lot wrong. I think the majority of criticism that gets thrown his way is around selection and it's been just at times over the years. He's done a lot right as well in fairness to him. He's done well to get the training camps at Loughborough set up, he's utilised the pathway from Knights player to full international well and he seems to have got rid of the old club rivalries that seemed to effect the squad (a bit too well seeing as a mix of players went out and got sloshed).

Should he continue? A lot will depend on the next two weeks I feel. The preparation has been good and he has a good squad but so do the other teams we'll face. He's done as good a job as some previous and more vaunted coaches like Tony Smith and Noble did in fairness. He possibly has a better set of players though.

The Coach - not sure he's done alot wrong (although I would never have selected Chase).

Kevin Sinfield - that will depend on whether he calls it a day. If not, he'll be hard to ignore by anyone selecting an England team so long as he keeps his current form simply because he is one of our best players.

Widdop - can't see what people see in him. Less than average for me.

If England win the World Cup will McNamara and Sinfield get OBE's or a Knighthood?

The coach should be knighted. After all Alf Ramsey and Clive Woodward did. If we will this it is a far, far bigger achievement than England winning the Union WC (who with their playing numbers and resources should win their WC every time if they had any idea how to play their game).

I desperately want England to win the World Cup but I actually want it a little more knowing that RLFANS will go into meltdown at the thought of Sir Steve McNamara!

All this swiping at Sinfield is embarrassing. If Sinfield was poor in a sea of superb England performances, then you might have a point. But the reality is when England play well, you can pretty much guarantee Sinfield will have put in a good show. So why does nobody else cop the same amount of flak? This only serves to demonstrate the value of Sinfield to this England side.

Regarding all this about Widdop, you also should know that it's in the Outside Backs that England struggle against Oz. Darius Boyd is underrated. Don't expect Widdop to win it for England. Ryan Hall is overrated, so is Charnley.

So two very good players at club level, in very, very good teams, can't replicate at Rep level. Peacock could, that is my point for Sinfield and I have no problem with your choice of Tomkins but he does offer us something very different to everyone else on his day, an X factor.



The Exiles game will stay or something else will take its place. What chance on Graham being released by his club for a mid season fixture on the other side of the world? Changing long term can be a goal but sometimes continuity is more desirable in the short term.

And FWIW I like the job McDermott has done at Leeds and London before that. He has something that turns faltering teams into performing teams. Sounds like just what England need.

Sinfield has been selected at 7. He isn't the best scrum half in SL, Danny Brough is with perhaps Matty Smith behind him. Sinfield wears the 13 shirt at Leeds but plays 6. He is too slow for 6 at Intl level.
In Intl rugby 1st and 2nd receivers have to be fast, neither Sinfield or Chase have pace. Brough has pace as does Widdop.

I thought McNamara was going to Bath RU after the World Cup. I do hope so!
The England coaching job I think will go part time. The leading contenders have to be Wane and McDermott. If the GB gig turns up then I'd expect Wane and Harris to be the coaches in that set up.

Blimey this site depresses me at times. We are four days away from a home world cup semi-final and a major conversation point is who is going to get fired or retire if we lose. Until a defeat arrives (or should I say if a defeat arrives), why can't we just revel in the occasion, these should be the best days for years for English Rugby League fans
