It may be that like for like TV viewing figures are down a long way, which would be very concerning indeed.

It might be that the new timing slots are less attractive, or that we are being shown on channels with less subscribers. This would still be concerning but in a slightly different way and with slightly different consequences.

Likelihood is it's a mixture of reasons, which all need to be properly considered. But it seems some people will only consider it to be 100% due to a decline in viewer interest or 100% due to scheduling.

For what it's worth I think the standard has been poor so far this year and I look forward to watching the TV games less than I did = decline in viewer interest. I also, however, sometimes still completely forget about the Thursday night games (for some reason the only night stamped in my mind as a TV RL night is Friday), plus I have BT Vision = scheduling.

I am speaking from a position of ignorance though as I have zero clue how the figures are compiled.

Not all attendance figures are down, for instance both HKR and St.Helens are up on comparative matches last season and I read elsewhere at least three championship clubs are showing healthy increases.

That is the question that all the SL clubs should be aiming the games to be, blockbusters, and people clamouring to be there.

I ask a simple question, what is Rugby League and why should I be interested?

That is the biggest challenge the game has and IMO it doesn't know where to start.

The game has always struggled to promote itself and lives to much in the past.

The gam needs a new modern dynamic to make people aware.

As explained we've lost 4 in a row and sit bottom of the table despite yet more hype over the off season, I'm all for new ideas to promote the game but at the same time you can't polish a turd! Form and hype about a teams potential are the biggest factors in getting a good crowd through the turnstiles in any sport.

Whilst it's a concern at present, the RFL have a secure TV deal in place and therefore the numbers won't affect income. Also, when the Football season ends, the SL TV numbers will improve once it's back on SS1.

fwiw we are only 5 rounds in, its not encouraging for the new system which you would hope had at least the novelty factor, but its only 5 rounds. Attendances are likely to increase this season if only for the fact the big clubs will play each other more.

its not the success we were told it would be, and it is worrying that the RFL have mortgaged our future on a system and a plan that hasn't even arrested a decline but its not the apocalypse.
