You live in union land though GF.
Of course the nrl deal will match afl's.
Of course ceo's of nrl clubs who are losing money hand over fist will want to give any spare cash to start a png side, because they really care about international rl.

Quote: gutterfax "Yes, it could. I never said it couldn't, but I still say that PNG and its Government should achieve the targets set it by the international groups that provide it with aid before anyone thinks about putting an NRL team in.'" Why? There seems to be no discernable link between these two things. Many many countries receive aid and targets, India for one. But it didnt mean they were incapable of hosting the IPL or Commonwealth games, nor that these sports werent good for India.
Quote: gutterfax "In your opinion maybe.......and I don't disagree in principle, but you are moving away from facts and now dealing in fiction.'" So in what way is it fiction?
Quote: gutterfax "Let's look at the GDP shall we. That's a serious wedge......I wonder where it's all going? The average income of the 6.5 million + citizens of PNG is under US$1,000 year........I wonder why there are no roads, decent hospitals, educational establishments for all....surely it is the responsibility of the Governement to supply these, but somehow, this GDP od 15 Billion is slipping through the net. Could it be that international investors ensure they make a fortune with the help of a few politicians.'"
Probably, though im not sure, in principle how that is different from any other country. The UK and the billions squirreled away by Vodafone immediately springs to mind. And im sure those international investors will be among the first to join in with the sponsorship of a PNG NRL side. It makes them look good.
Quote: gutterfax "Nope...but we are talking about a nation that is violent as well as being third world when it comes to infastructure, healthcare, education, communications etc.....we are not talking about a country where those things are not an issue.'" But it isnt as violent as Brazil and is only as violent as Russia, these countries do have issues with infrastructure, healthcare education, communications etc, go to a favela in Sao Paolo and tell me it isnt a third world country, look at the amazon basin and tell me it isnt third world.
Quote: gutterfax "BTW....on the Russia front. I have a mate who freelances in Outside Broadcasting. He has been all over the world, covering major events.....and he says the most harrowing and frustrating job was the Champions League final between United and Chelsea. He did the Commonwealth games, which he described as brilliant and luxurious when compared to getting his rig to Moscow..........the security in Russia was the tightest he has ever witnessed and that includes 3 Olympic games and 2 winter olympics, an asian games and the IPL Cricket.
So as you asked, I wouldn't want an ESL team in Russia either

I've been on these boards long enough to know not to get sucked into a Quote: SmokeyTA " debate with you pal.
Bottom line is we will agree to disagree. You think PNG is ready for an NRL team and that team will sort out some of that countries problems, I on the other hand think you're wrong.
BTW....The Bill for the Insurance on 5 Outside Broadcast Rigs transported to Russia for The Champions League Final there cost in excess of 3 million pounds. Each rig is worth over 48 million and they had a russian army escort from the Finnish border to moscow and back......as I said, I wouldn't want ESL putting a team there (unless they leave stevo and wiggy there)

| Could/would players be expected to live there?
Or would they train and live in northern Australia and fly in for games?

Don't be daft
If you read this thread from the start you will see that there are already 1.2 million registered players in PNG and the PNG team would be drawn fom these. They would live there and probably get about $20,000 a year for being a pro RL player......at least it's more than Billy Slater earns in a week (isn't it?)

| the problem with the NRL is we have too many places that need a team ASAP, thats whats holding back PNG.
In australia perth, central coast and probably 3 more queensland teams are an absolute must.
NZ really needs at least 1 more team, id go two if the finances were good.
and then theres PNG and even Adelaide..
the SL war lessened the apetitie for expansion, espeically to the more exotic places
However with the NRL salary cap set to rise to $6 - 7 million backed by TV grants the situation down the track will change dramactically.
we are looking at our next TV deal being $1 - $1.5 billion comapred to $500 million now
then when we add 2 out of perth, central coast and brisbane well get another massive increase next time
so by the next TV contract the landscape will be ripe for PNG IF they get their bid sorted out
the priority now is getting the salary cap up so we keep our elite players and even raid the union ranks again plus expand to the "easy" places
come 2020 NZ II and PNG would be quite ready for admittance to the nrl which would take us to a whole new level obliterating our domestic competitots

NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg |

| They should ditch the talk of an NRL bid for now and instead concentrate on what is more likely within the next 20years. the start of the national academy league is a great start and linking it to school attendance will be a great national benefit. Then they should be developing a stadium so they can host more Internation games and eventually NRL games. They should be lobbying the Australian Govt to make it easier for Jnr PNG players to get working visas in Oz and be aiming for a sustainable Q'land cup team. NRL should have some salary cap expemptions for PNG players signing to Oz clubs. Throw in more decent games for the kumuls and sorting out the mess that they have with who is actually running the game in PNG and they will be well on the way to taking the NRL opportunity if it ever comes up. Paying the Brisbane Broncos $250k to get their bid logo on the shorts isn't exactly a good investment imo!
