51!!!
Was gonna say Mick. Otherwise, my memories are of Ian Gildart. Used to average around 40 tackles a game. Bloody useless running at the line though!
Steele Retchless though was the one player I can remember from modern times for being truly renowned for his work in defence.

| Jimmy Taylor for Leigh at the moment. Tackles hard and consistantly and one against sheffield a few weeks ago was amazing!

Funny you mention that - I played a few times against Denis Betts and Ian Gildart when they played together at u15's & u17's - Gildart was the star of the show and was touted as the next big thing... then when they turned pro, he lost his running game completely and the coaches turned him into a workhorse
Betts of course went on to GB honours and NRL
You never know do you!

25852_1297892995.jpg You've stolen my washing
From out my back garden
You've tarmacked my driveway
Even though I said no
You've nicked my lead flashing
And weighed it in at the scrappy
Oh St Helen's tatters

He holds the SL game record, doesn't he? 66 or something like.
In his relatively short Bulls career, Tahi Reihana did a bit. Langers (Jamie Langley) is a bit of a tackle machine as well.

| Many of these guys will inevitably be forwards. To mix it up a bit, how's about Alfie Langer. Was always bowled over with the way he'd pull down the biggest lads on the pitch time and time again.
Back to Wigan (sorry!) and an obvious one - Dean Bell was always immense in defence!

Still to this day don't know if I've seen another player who you might say suited the term workhorse quite like Gildart did. Don't think he was ever hero material, but I hope he reads this, as he was my favourite player as a kid cos I loved tackling.

| Ian Morrison was good for us in our national league days although our best tackler now is probably galea, briscoe or murrell although stats show murrell and galea also miss a few.
Jimmy Walker was great defender for us back in the dark days once doing 60+ tackles in one game and then being taken to hospital with a broken arm after the same game (plus the hit he put on carvell at the kc in a 'friendly' that knocked him out)
Richard Slater had a year at Rovers and was solid alongside Paul Fletcher in our back row.
The best tackler i've seen against us or live include Gary connolly and Richard Swain (as others have said).

I kept the faith and I kept voting
Not for the iron fist but for the helping hand
For theirs is a land with a wall around it
And mine is a faith in my fellow man
Theirs is a land of hope and glory
Mine is the green field and the factory floor
Theirs are the skies all dark with bombers
And mine is the peace we knew

That's good news - I didn't know Ian socially but he seemed like a good bloke
