Still not right in this day and age though , true sporting contests [ not cups involving luck of the draw ] should be decided by league position as in most world class sports

Quite a lot of sports use playoffs and grand finals to decide the champions, it also means teams have things to play for all the way through to the last games of the domestic season and retains interest for the fans.
Playoffs and GF all the way for me.

So what you mean is, every sport apart from Association Football (and then not all of the time) uses a playoff system?
If so what are you on about?

| Just to clarify, some people really think that Leeds should be declared Champions because they only lost to Harlequins whilst St. Helens lost to Wakefield and Hull KR (twice)? Really? That's what makes a Champion team?

| Quote: pyeman "In your opinion. For me the trophy which shows which team was consistantly the best throughout the course of the season has a lot of value. A team could struggle all year, be half way down the table and get lucky or there opponants might struggle with injuries/fatigue. Its possible a side could win the grand final by fluke, but you wont come top of the league unless your the best side in the competition.'"
What if the best team in the competition suffer major injuries and lose a game and lose out on the top spot because of this to. Your argument also goes against you.
The Grand Final has been a major success since it's ineption - why would anybody want to downgrade it? I don't want to see the days of the Premiership playoffs again with 40,000 max at Old Trafford.

English Rugby Union
NRL, AFL in Aus
NFL, MLB, well, all American Sports (and the wild card systems means a team that doesn't even win its regional division can still be the champion team)
e.t.c.

| I don't know why we bother with the normal season, we might as well just have a grand final and put Saints and Leeds in it. Thus saving the fans of other clubs a lot of time and money.

| Players like Wilkin and Graham should be promoting the game not slagging it off at every opportunity. Small minded players, the club seems to breed them what with Cunningham hardly playing for his country then retiring from international footie despite being the best hooker we've produced for a generation and Wilkin and Graham disinterested in the bigger picture. Small town club, small minded attitude to the game I hope Leeds stuff them at Old Trafford.

| I have real problems understanding why anyone can object to the grand final idea of that the winner is not the true champion. every major sport including soccer use it(World cup & European cup both qualifying leagues then knockout) even the leagues in Europe can be seen as a qualifiying competition for the champions league which is a league with a knock out finals.
As for being only done fore the finances? well yes we are a profesional sport it is the only reason the clubs exist now & do people think Sky or any other broadcaster would pay as much when the champions could in theory be known two thirds into the season? they have advertising to sell.
One thing I would sugest is that the league leaders trophy should actualy be the lid of the Superleague trophy so if you win both you have the complete trophy in the cabinate. An idea I had after I heard Mr McClenan say that they had got the lid now lets get the rest when interviewed on TV)

| What's more it takes a special kind of team/player/coach to produce a winning performance in front of 75000 fans in a one-off, winner takes all game. Being consistent in regular league fixtures is an achievement, but doesn't in itself make you a champion team or champion player.
Im a huge fan of the grand final concept for sporting as much as financial merit.

It's possible but they would have to beat 4 of the top teams in the league to achieve that, which would still take to skill and can't all be down to luck. I feel that any team that can overcome those odds deserves to be rewarded.

I said ' world class sport ' , there is only one , and in most if not all those competitions they use a league system to decide their Champions
