| Quote: bren2k "So SPOTY was a big and important thing - until Kev didn't win, and now it's worthy of scorn and derision; and fixed?
RL fans elevated themselves for a brief moment in coming together to support Sinfield's nomination - then quickly reverted to type when he came second. Ah well - it was good while it lasted.'"
Unsurprising comment from someone who thought RL fans too tribal to get behind one of our games greats in the interests of our game.

How about you actually find what he said in context.
I'm paraphrasing here, but he says that he thinks the world will end if paedophilia is legalised. He talks about a trinity of evil (homosexuality, abortion and paedophilia) and says that two of them have already been legalised, which would have been considered crazy talk 50 years ago. So he says the idea that paedophilia one day being legal is not as outlandish as you might think, and the world will end when it happens.
Ridiculous religious mumbo jumbo of course, but really not that offensive.
Tbh I find the fact that you have effectively accused him of wanting paedophilia made legal based on misreading half a quote more offensive than what he actually said.

Then you're too easily offended!
If that's the context in which he said that, which is not the way it's been widely reported all over the world, then as always I'm happy to be corrected. It's still a very stupid and ridiculous thing to say unless you agree that abortions under any circumstance, homosexuals and pedophiles are the same.
Even if we excuse his ridiculous, insulting and outlandish rant about the above three subjects that still leaves his silly misogynistic quote about women.
You defend him if you like but I'm pretty insulted by what he said!

I don't agree with a word of what he said, and I agree that its a shame that people still hold those views. I am also however strongly against censorship. So if that is how he feels then that's up to him, and I would have been disappointed if the heavyweight champ was banned from a sporting competition of sporting achievement purely because he said some things that people don't like. He hasn't commited a crime, he's just made some silly comments.

| I really can't see how you're offended by my post yet you want to defend Tyson Fury
Fury has also been filmed talking to camera - grinning as he sits with his entourage - making threats to Holt.
This included saying jaw completely with one straight right hand. I won't do it as I'll get in trouble but the big fella there will annihilate him.
'Oliver, take a good look at him because that's the face you're going to see before you hit the deck.
'[Turning camera to another member of his team] And that's the face you're going to see when he's jumping on your head.' '"
Real Sportsman of the Year material is Tyson!

Your comment didn't offend me at all, it was tongue in cheek. Admittedly that doesn't always come across when written on a forum.
We can agree that the man is an idiot, not the best role model (although the effort he has put in to get where he is cant be denied), and I admit that had he won a part of me would have been a little disappointed.
However he achieved a great deal, even in a poor era for the division it is a huge thing to be heavyweight champ. The fact that people don't like his views shouldn't see him disqualified from the competition. If you disagree then that's up to you. Personally I think what Ryan Giggs did was worse than any thing Fury has ever said or done, but no one questioned it when he won.

To be honest I think he needs to show a prolonged period of 'improvement'.....not just one apology which felt a desperate attempt to douse the flames both for him and the BBC who have also come under fire for this.
For those saying freedom of speech. Well yes but that applies both ways and people have the freedom of speech to criticise his views and believe he wouldn't be on the show. Personally think he should've been taken out of the show as it started to turn into a circus surrounding his involvement and having his named booed and having to issues apologies during his interview shouldn't be what the night involves. Also thought is was poor taste and unfair to Greg Rutherford that the BBC cut to him a couple of times during Fury's interview trying to obviously milk the heat between the two.

Giggs' win happened a year or two before all his antics came out.

Fair enough. I didn't realise it was that long ago that he won the award.

| Quote: wire-quin "The guy is the world heavyweight boxing champion. Its a sport person of the year award. Only modern sensitivities (and views like yours) could prevent a worthy contender like Fury from being nominated. If it is truly a sport personality award then Jesus we have given it to Murray who by his own words is a dull as a weekend in Worthing.
Murray is world no 2 unlike Fury, Hamilton, Mo, JIH, etc etc
I hope you enjoyed your sports equivalent of Question Time.
Ps did you not hear Fury apologise??'"
Modern sensitivities?
What is wrong with someone objecting to Fury's views? Unless you're one Fury's tribe of ted supporters who only think free speech is allowed one way.
Ah well at least incidents like Fury, Farage, Griffin etc flush out the racists and homophobes and general scumbags who don't dare stick their head above the parapet.

| I didn't realise Nigel F was a Homophobe. Are all euro Sceptics Homophobes?
I suppose if you throw in a couple of polorising characters its adds to your argument. You've won me over.

How would you feel if his remarks/views were not of a sexist or homophobic nature but were racist? Should racist comments be viewed as freedom of speech?

| ironic that the 1st and 2nd in the sports "personality" award both have the personality of a pea! but well done to Sinfield, it's a big coup for RL to have someone in 2nd place.
although i do have to say i don't think the award or indeed the night is as prestigious as it used to be, i only watched bits of it last night but the bits i saw seemed to be very PC and sycophantic, awarding awards to NI people in Belfast for example.

| oh and on the BBC radio 2 sports news this morning the reporter happily stated that Sinfield is technically a RU player and not a RL player
