Great maths. You do realise that 11000 people will spend more money at the stadium than 5000 don't you?
It was a brilliant game apart from costing me a fortune on sky bet. I enjoyed the Hull KR v Saints game too the other week, maybe the cup has re emerged.

| Quote: dubairl "its just the negativity which catches on, 1 fan moans about it then 2 will moan and all of a sudden its becomes fashionable to moan about everything rugby league. Never mind that at the moment there seems to be more exciting youngsters coming through teams than i can remember at any other time. Back to the cup its a good competition and the big teams that get knocked out just say "o'well its only the challenge cup".
over in Aus the commentators are warned about complaining about the ref or the standard of the a match, they are told to be positive about the game unlike stevo and eddie who study each play to try and find a negative and complain about a ref call.'"
Maybe that's because in Oz the TV companies are competing for coverage. If they are too negative, then it could effect them getting TV rights.
Here we know SKY are getting the SL and BBC the CC. So commentators are free to be negative.
However, SKY do put fake positives on RL, every game is the greatest ever, and the league just gets better and better. That's the mantra, it's just when it comes down to the commentary, the negative always seams to come out of Stevo. Rather than it's a great try, it's poor defense.

And in this he is doing what he usually does: stating the obvious. By its nature, a try scored means that the defence hasn't been as good as needed otherwise the try would not have been scored! However, as you say, he invariably fails to mention the skill involved in fooling the defence or getting round it/over it or whatever it has taken to break the defensive line.
I agree with those who have said that the BBC commentary was very good yesterday, as was the discussion on the red button show. The BBC has come a long way in the last few years and now I prefer their set up to that of Sky. Sky come across as dated and dumbed down. They need a complete refresh but I don't think they view our sport as important enough anymore to do a refresh.

You do realise that the Giants don't own the Stadium or concession stands, and wont make much match day revenue in the form of food and drink, etc.

| Yawn, so people would rather see a 25,000 seat stadium with 5,000 rattling about live on BBC - yep, that would be perfect publicity in World Cup year.

| It was a great crowd and yes it needed a big marketing push and cheap tickets to do it, but it was great to be there and I'm sure it looked better for the cameras too. It felt like a semi final, with great support from both teams. Proper cup rugby, do or die performances.
Is it the re-emergence of the cup? Not yet, but if all those left in the cup push the competition in a similar way to Huddersfield and Leeds then maybe it could be the start of something.

No id rather see it as full as possible, but I don't see how this a 'great' crowd considering how cheap the tickets were. Its been far better than the usual rubbish crowds we see in the Challenge Cup, but nothing to suggest the 're-emergence of the Challenge Cup'.

| it was full of excitement that game yesterday and i am sure a few of the newbies who paid 8quid will go back and watch a few more games.
huddersfield struggle for attendance and getting more people threw the gates at discounted price will only help them not hinder them.

| People are complaining the prices were too cheap, lets put it into perspective, 8Euros is what people pay per match for the top level of football in the German Bundesligue of which 2 teams are in the European final.
What is the need to charge to 25 pound per ticket in order to be a succesful sport?

It was an great crowd for the two teams involved. More than the equivalent SL fixture last time, and more than most play off attendances.
Maybe it suggests that SL ticket prices are too high, considering that the weekly rounds largely count for nothing apart from maybe the battle for 8th spot.

the Giants own 60% of the Stadium (not a lot of people know that) and therfore will take 60% of the rental for concession stands (these are least to franchises

You do realise they own 60% of the stadium, also will sell programmes, HT draw tickets etc.

| I have heard the CH 9 commentators plenty of times criticise the ref and standard of play in games.

Well I am aware now that a seperate company owns 60% of the Stadium, and both have the same owner. It will hardly transfer to 60% of everything going directly to the Giants. Wow, programmes and HT draw tickets, you really think that will make a ton of money?
Sorry maybe the NRL has spoilt it for me, but I will never consider that a great crowd considering the price.
Quote: jonny the leyther "Maybe it suggests that SL ticket prices are too high, considering that the weekly rounds largely count for nothing apart from maybe the battle for 8th spot.'"
Well we all know the problems with the weekly rounds, that's another matter. Most SL ticket prices are very reasonable, especially compared to many other sports. I don't understand how everyone seems to want to pay as little as possible to go to the games but moan that their isn't enough money in the sport. RL seems to have a huge problem in some areas, where you can only get decent crowds by dramatically reducing ticket prices.
Quote: jonny the leyther "People are complaining the prices were too cheap, lets put it into perspective, 8Euros is what people pay per match for the top level of football in the German Bundesligue of which 2 teams are in the European final.

Im not complaining that the ticket prices where too cheap, im just think that considering the price, I don't see that crowd as being great. Not all tickets are that cheap in Germany, I think a few recent articles have people believing that every fan other there pays sod all to watch their team. They are cheap compared to football in this country.
What is there need to bring in money in order to be a successful sport? Quite a lot really, ticket sales bring in a lot of revenue for the club, a lot more than programme sales and half time draws.

| I dont think Saturday was about making money, it was a bout getting a good crowd in - which we did, which in turn :
1. looked good on TV for any non RL fans watching
2. meant it was afforfable to everyone
3. created a belting atmosphere inside the ground.
Some people would have probably been happy with 4,000 sat in silence in an empty ground but i, and everyone who was there thought it was superb.
It might not have made either club any money but it sure as hell portrayed our great game in a shining light once again !
